Name: Lapampasaurus cholinoi
Name Meaning: La Pampa Reptile
First Described: 2012
Described By: Coria, Riga & Casadio
Classification: Dinosauria, Ornithischia, Genasauria, Neornithischia, Cerapoda, Ornithopoda, Iguanodontia, Dryomorpha, Ankylopollexia, Styracosterna, Hadrosauriformes, Hadrosauroidea, Hadrosauridae
Lapampasaurus is a Hadrosaurid known from the Allen Formation in La pampa Province, Argentina. It lived around 76 to 70 million years ago, in the Campanian age of the Late Cretaceous. It is known from fairly fragmentary remains, however its presence in South America indicates that Hadrosaurids had diversified and expanded there more than previously thought (given that Hadrosaurids are primarily known from North America and Asia). It probably was in one of the two major Hadrosaurid groups, however the remains are too indeterminate to definitively assign it to one or the other.
