Laptop Update: It's Basically Useless for Personal Use, RIP 💀💻
Hey y’all, got an update about the laptop situation!
So for my birthday, my dad got me an actual laptop! Like my OWN laptop for real! 💀 I was super excited because I thought this meant I could finally get back on Discord (since I can't download it on grandma's Apple phone), use Tumblr more easily, maybe get online jobs faster, all that good stuff!
He swore he was only putting parental controls to see how much time I spend on the laptop (4 hours daily maximum) and NOTHING like seeing what I post or checking my personal stuff. I wanted to trust him that he wouldn't try to nose into anything "personal" and that he'd resist the "parental temptation" to peek at more than just screen time!
My plan was to test it out slowly - try using Tumblr, maybe Discord, see if he got mad. If he seemed cool about it, great! If he got weird about what I was doing, I'd just treat it like a school computer and only use it for homework. Basically "test the thing little at a time to make sure it doesn't explode" strategy! 💀
I even told him straight up: "Ok, I'll try to trust you, but if you get mad with what I do, I am using it for school stuff only from now on" 👁️👄👁️
BUT THEN...
Even if he didn't intend it (which... doubt), the "parental controls" he set up are driving me CRAZY!
I can log into my Tumblr account just fine, but to actually ACCESS my blog and POST anything? It's this whole "Microsoft" thing of "Ask the adult for permission to get in" like I'm a small child! So I literally can't POST on Tumblr from the laptop! 💀
And Discord? Can't access it AT ALL because the laptop is in S mode, and to get out of S mode I need HIS admin password! And if I ask for it he'll get suspicious as fuck!
So I wrote in the Google search bar (in case he can see search history): "FINE, DAD! IF YOU DON'T WANT ME TO USE THIS LAPTOP FOR PERSONAL USES, JUST SAY SO INSTEAD OF REQUIRING ME TO ASK PERMISSION TO ENTER WEBSITES! I AM 19, BUT FINE, I WILL ONLY USE THE SCHOOL APPROVED STUFF FROM NOW ON IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT SO BADLY!"
Yep, no Discord until I can get my damn phone... and posting on Tumblr will have to be continued on my grandma's phone!

So the laptop that was supposed to give me more freedom is basically just a glorified school computer now! I can use it for:
School assignments ✓
Job applications (so I can finally get money for my OWN phone) ✓
Maybe YouTube if it's not blocked? ✓
Reading Tumblr but NOT posting ✓
But posting on social media? Discord?? NOPE! Back to borrowing grandma's phone like always!
The irony of getting a laptop for my birthday and it being basically useless for what I actually wanted to use it for is not lost on me 😭
I'M 19! Couldn't he have set this up properly for once?! And maybe switched out of S mode for me?? Like I'm a legal adult in college, not a 9 year old who needs permission to access websites!
At least I can still work on getting a job with it I guess? Silver lining? Maybe?
Anyway, Discord mutuals - I'm STILL stuck without Discord access! I miss y'all but I literally cannot download it and can't access the web version without "adult permission" 💀 Hopefully once I get my own phone this nightmare will finally be over!
