Archiving older finished work (or at least not developmental work from early sketchbooks) is useful for me because it allows me to look back with fresher eyes and see the work in context. This is a self portrait followed by a life drawing of Billy both on A1 cartridge in charcoal and rubber. The first is based on the traditional Ecce Homo which usually represents Jesus, beaten, tortured and crowned with thorns to be presented back to the crowd who (according to scripture) were baying for his blood. It seems it was Pilate’s intention to brutalise him and that would be enough. He presents Jesus saying “ecce homo!” (Behold the man) imagining that the crowd will relent but still they shouted, “crucify him!” all the louder. The word homo in Latin and Greek have different meanings. Different again in modern English. I damaged the face for several reasons but mostly to make the figure not just me but more generic for every homo who had spiritual violence inflicted on them. The treatment of the LGBT by the church is still the most profound damage in my life and decades later is still the central theme of my work.
