'I Can Hear Music' / 'Going Back' released in the UK, Germany and USA

🔸In the summer of 1972, Trident Studios' in-house engineer Robin Geoffrey Cable instigated an experimental project in an effort to emulate the "wall-of-sound" style made famous by Phil Spector. Queen happened to be recording their debut album in the studios at the time, so he invited Freddie Mercury to lay down the lead vocals who, in turn, roped in Brian May and Roger Taylor to provide percussion, guitar and backing vocals - as paid session musicians.

In June 1973, shortly before Queen's own debut album was released, EMI decided to cash in on the emerging glam rock trend and rushed out the resulting recordings as a 7" single under the name of Larry Lurex - an obvious send-up of Gary Glitter.

🔸The Ronettes (and later Beach Boys) classic 'I Can Hear Music' was recorded that summer in Trident Studios and features (per Freddie's insistance) Roger Taylor on drums and Brian May on guitar. The single was released in the UK a week before Queen's first album, becoming the first solo product by a Queen member. Freddie insisted the Queen name not be used for the release, so it was released under the pseudonym Larry Lurex.

🔸'Goin' Back' is best known as a 1966 single by Dusty Springfield. The song written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and was recorded by a number of artists including The Byrds, Phil Collins and eventually Carole King herself.

The song was used as the B-Side to the Larry Lurex single "I Cant Hear Music".

Every now and then I listen to 'Going Back' (as recorded by Larry Lurex) to hear Freddie's sweet 30 year-old voice❤️

LARRY LUREX unleashed!

In the summer of 1972, producer Robin Geoffrey Cable was attempting to recreate Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” effect in Trident Studios. He ran into Freddie, and asked him to contribute a vocal to the project. Freddie happily obliged, roping in Brian on guitar and Roger on various percussion instruments. The result was I Can Hear Music, a cover of the Ronettes’ 1966 classic.

As it wasn’t a Queen recording - the majority of instruments are played by session musicians, and John Deacon doesn’t feature at all - it was released under the name Larry Lurex (originally Larry Lurex And The Voles From Venus, a pisstake of Gary Glitter (ugh) and Bowie’s Spiders From Mars) the following year, with the sublime Going Back on the B-side (which doesn’t feature any other members of Queen).

I Can Hear Music failed to receive any airplay and subsequently sank without trace. It was officially unavailable until 2000, when it was released as part of the Freddie box set The Solo Collection. Both tracks are currently available on the Messenger Of The Gods CD and vinyl box set, as well as Lover Of Life, Singer Of Songs.

Keep Yourself Alive, Queen’s debut single, was released two weeks after I Can Hear Music.

It’s a bit late, but I FINALLY finished and uploaded my Freddie/ Queen tribute. I am so proud of the end result, if you can/ like please give it a look. I really hope y’all enjoy it. It would have been out sooner but, my goodness, I can’t begin to tell you how overwhelming it was to make this from time to time, seeing as I let my emotions get the better of me.

Do you know who “Larry Lurex” is ?

We’ve all heard of Freddie Mercury, but few are those who know the name  « Larry Lurex ». You’d be surprised to know, that these are actually the same person. Let me explain.

In the summer of 1972, when Queen was producing their self-titled debut album, a sound engineer by the name of Robby Geoffrey Cable working for their record decided to let Freddie record some covers. Freddie decided then to bring in at the same time Brian and Roger for some guitar, percussion and backing vocals.

The first press had a typo with « Her » instead of « Hear »

The two songs he made covers of are « I Can Hear Music » and « Goin’ Back » but decided to publish them under a different name: Larry Lurex.

The name is a pun based on a rock star’s stage name « Garry Glitter » but instead of glitter the material lurex was chosen. Then, a not so clever combination of the two created that name.

You can also hear at the end of Freddie’s last recorded track « Mother love » a bit of the recording of « Goin’ Back ». So technically, this is the first audio ever of Freddie’s voice... and is also included in the last one we hear. How awesome is that?
