Final Twin Peaks thoughts
I’m glad I’ve finally gotten through all of Twin Peaks. I am not going to write off the possibility of doing a rewatch, though it would be years in the future. And I still want to be a David Lynch completist, at least for features. (Which means I still need to watch The Elephant Man and Dude 1984.)
But, I also think that the accolades some give it for Laura Palmer’s story are unearned. The idea that the reveal that she was sexually abused and murdered by her father was somehow ground breaking ignores how stories that did cover similar material were dismissed as trashy. Peyton Place is the most famous predecessor in that respect, though censorious editors forced the change of the abusive father into abusive step father, a distinction without a difference. It’s not interested in how pervasive misogyny is. It would have to care more about the interior lives of more female characters than it does.
But I don’t need it to be that. Las Azules/Women in Blue is coming back next month. Furious looks promising. I hope there is more in the future.
