i grew up on sci-fi but it was always treated as fantasy. i loved those conspiracy alien shows but they always gave my sister a panic attack when she was younger…
Hmm, that's interesting. Only one of you developed some kind of fear from it. I guess it really depends on the person

I was terrified of “greys” mostly. I grew up watching sci fi, and unsolved mysteries and shit. But omg, greys still scare the bejesus out of me. and I love sci fi and the idea of aliens. But just.. NOPE.
All aboard the grey nope train! And yeah, sounds a bit like my situation, love space and sci-fi and aliens otherwise.

My fascination with space also stemmed from fear of aliens and abductions, but I came into it all on my own. I read books about encounters and watched shows and was terrified but also engaged and curious.
Interesting! Because I'm also pretty sure I wouldn't be this interested if I hadn't grown up with the fear. Now that I think about it, I would voluntarily look at the books about alien encounters we had lying around, because I was curious but also really terrified. Kind of a fear-fuelled curiosity.

that simpsons episode in the 90s about mr burns undergoing surgery/was high on pain meds that was a parody of x files fucked me the fuck up. i was terrified of aliens after that. i grew out of it, and that terror was replaced with zombies
yyyep I'd also be terrified of stuff that's meant to be funny. Like Mars Attacks. Fucked me up.
Interestingly, the one Simpsons episode I remember watching that scared me shitless was one about zombies.

I was more scared of the metaphorical monsters in the dark
Interesting.
I think for some reason I found aliens more tangible than monsters as a child, though probably nothing metaphorical.
My mum also asked around and at least we know we're not alone in having these childhood fears. Still though, I wonder if there's a trend, and how far back these nightmares go
I know there was a UFO/alien craze and a bunch of doomsday bs around the year 2000 and all that shit but that doesn't really account for my mum's generation
