The Dance of the Beatified
Detail from The Last Judgement by Fra Angelico (c. 1425)
Our Daily Bread
Fun fact, the “daily bread” is actually a mistranslation — the original Bible verse actually is “Give us today our epiousion bread”, with the Greek word epiousion and its derivative epiousios having several meanings, including… “to go” (as in, for tomorrow or the future).
Interestingly, the corresponding number for this word in Strong’s Convordance is 1967, when Aziraphale gave Crowley a thermos full of Holy Water and expressed a hope for some future food and entertainment at the Ritz, maybe even a picnic. It was also the year when the Sexual Offences Act legalised homosexual acts between men in England and Wales.
The five slices of pizza held by Jesus on the drawing and two fish in the corner are a biblical reference to the Feeding of the 5,000, also known as the “miracle of the five loaves and two fish”. The wine — probably the turning water into wine during the wedding at Cana.
As for Jesus’s actual daily bread, Roman Empire came up with cura annonae, a social welfare system including state-sponsored distribution of grains and even already baked bread. Flat one, similar to pizza. That’s what Juvenal referenced in his famous “bread and games” quote, describing the political tactic of managing the public by diversion, distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, “by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses).”
Like a pizza party distracting people from the upcoming Last Judgement.

Saint Dumitru Stăniloae’s The Experience of God: Volume 6 - The Fulfillment of Creation [FREE PDF]
His approach is by no means "dogmatic” in an authoritarian sense. He is never content simply to state propositional truths in a doctrinaire fashion, but he seeks to expound the reasons that underlie the Church’s teaching, indicating the inner logic of the Orthodox faith, its unity and coherence, and likewise its personal relevance to daily Christian living. This sixth and final volume of The Experience of God has as its subject what in Western theology are termed “the four last things”: death, judgment, heaven, and hell. Fr. Dumitru maintains that, for each one of us, this present life is the time of decisive choice, and yet at the same time, there is progress after death. [His] unshakeable faith in the resurrection - in the conclusive victory of life over death - confers on Fr. Dumitru’s understanding of the last things a resounding note of hope. For many years to come The Experience of God will form an invaluable resource for all who seek to enter more deeply into the inner meaning of Orthodoxy.
