Erin M Johnson - Artist’s Statement

@erinm-johnson introduces and analyzes the inherent ataraxia and candor of optical color, legible text, light and overall movement through a visual space by  touching on a multilayered and in-depth, diaristic dialogue through readily available mediums including craft-store paint, hot glue, plastic wrappings, and other various found objects. They attempt to manipulate and study the theories of color, light and visual space with the use of extreme vibrancies along with  rapidly paced, staccato rhythm and faux-randomly structured shifts in hue. The use of cheap materials and ignorance of refined production try to reflect on the brief academic training they received at the Kansas City Art Institute. Johnson draws inspiration from movements such as Surrealism and  the Dada movement, looking at artists like Marcel Duchamp, Louise Zhang, and Yves Tanguy.

After a work is complete, the attachment that was initially shared between the artist and the piece becomes obsolete, thus, touching and damaging of any kind are not only excused but in fact encouraged.

There is an echo near me and behind (where fractal selves spiral into cosmic winds creating galaxies anew) and other outside fragments don’t seem to penetrate my skin, as if sobriety is the safest shield. The very demon I fought for three years has become a mere concept to reflect upon. (you, unbeknownst to me, left the only soul i really knew in a parking lot in August that first year.) I can see the gusts of wind pushing - not against me but with me - and they no longer knock me down, because they have changed. See, because now they carry me up and over, past the mountains I climbed, solitary and sorrowful, but armed with success on my hip throughout every mile traveled toward the atmospheric edge. I can listen to the songs that we wrote accompanying parts to without tearing at my own vocal cords. I can scrape the ground of the garden we planted, tear apart the flattened earth with my shortest fingernails or a rake. See, because now it is my choice - and I chose to move on.
