The cancellation of The Late Show - which will not have a new host; it’s just being outright cancelled - is a direct result of this administration trying to end the freedom of the press.

Very cool that CBS looked at their options:

• cave to an authoritarian who openly wants control of the press and to end all speech and media that criticizes him, or

• stand up for democratic values

and chose the first option because they had a billion dollar merger to think about 😢

This should deeply alarm everyone.

To recap:

- Donald Trump sued CBS for a “60 Minutes” segment where they edited out part of Kamala Harris’s answer in an interview. This was routine editing to fit the interview into the time allotted and was in no way misleading. CBS could easily have won this case in court; there was really no case.

- But CBS/Paramount needed the Trump administration to approve their proposed merger with Skydance Media*, so they chose to settle instead, allowing Trump to control what happens on their network instead of standing up for the freedom of the press.

- Days later, CBS cancels The Late Show, on which Stephen Colbert routinely criticizes Donald Trump, for no obvious reason besides that Donald Trump doesn’t want it on the air anymore.

Cool. Anyone who works at CBS should be embarrassed to work there and certainly shouldn’t call themselves a reporter or a journalist. They’re pawns, and should quit if they want to retain any integrity. Join a media organization that will actually stand up for, you know, media.

So, so stupid.

CBS/Paramount caved in to Trump’s demand to fire Colbert because they wanted approval for their merger with Skydance.

"In his appearance on "The Late Show" on May 14, Letterman, a hero to late-night hosts (and a lot of critics), renewed one of his old bits as he and Colbert tossed office furniture off the roof of a building ― this time aiming for the CBS logo. At the end, Letterman channeled Edward R. Murrow, the famous CBS journalist, with a twist: "To the folks at CBS, in the words of the great Ed Murrow, good night, and good luck, (expletive)." John Oliver repeated the phrase on the May 17 episode of "Last Week with John Oliver."

Colbert's final guests include Jon Stewart, Steven Spielberg, performances by David Byrne and Bruce Springsteen and some guests that haven't been revealed. Way back when, when Colbert hosted "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, he played a parody of a Sean Hannity-like dim-bulb conservative talk-show host. On his first episode, in 2005, he introduced the word "truthiness" ― trusting in something because it feels like it's true, not because the facts support it.

It was a joke, a brilliant one. Unfortunately, it's turned out to be true, too. As in factually true. The real-life Colbert fought against truthiness. He may have lost his job, but at least he didn't lose his soul."
