A late night snack! Made by me. 😋🤤
Late-Night Snacking
Eating a late-night snack close to bedtime is a craving that can be hard to curb. It could be down to a number of reasons, such as hunger, habit, boredom, stress or simply unwinding before bedtime. However, the timing of your evening snack, the amount and quality of your snack could impact your health.
Late-Night Snacking
There are ups and downs to late-night snacking. Late night snacking may give your body essential nutrients it may have missed out on during the day. Nutritious foods like Greek yogurt with berries, whole-grain crackers with hummus, or a small portion of mixed nuts can be a good way to satisfy hunger.
Having high-protein foods before bed may also support rest and recovery if you're active and snacking late at night can help provide your body with nutrients needed for muscle recovery while you sleep.
May help regulate your blood sugar
According to a review published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2022, late-night snacking on high protein foods can help maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the night.
To prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes, eat snacks that combine protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates, such as an apple with nut butter, or whole-grain toast with avocado.
The downsides to late-night snacking
Late-night snacking can cause potential gastrointestinal discomfort during sleep, such as indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux, if you already have a pre-disposition to digestion issues. If you do take a late-night snack, avoid heavy or spicy foods and opt for light and easily digestible snacks that won't tax your digestive system, such as small bowl of porridge oats or a banana with almond butter.
It may cause you to wake frequently during sleep
Eating large snacks close to bedtime may also disrupt your sleep pattern, causing you to wake up periodically throughout the night. Avoid caffeine, sugary treats and high-calorie snacks before bed to enhance sleep quality.
Snacking may lead to weight gain
Late-night snacking is often done out of boredom or habit. This means you're likely to eat too many calories, which can cause unintentional weight gain. If late-night snacking is done while watching t.v. or another activity where you're not mindful of what you're eating, it can be easy to eat more food than you would otherwise.
If you're going to late night snack choose healthy options
Choose nutritious foods low in added sugars and saturated fats, but aim to eat snacks rich in protein and fibre. Nutritious choices for late-night snacking include Greek yogurt with berries, a small handful of nuts, a banana, whole-grain crackers with hummus, or a slice of whole-grain toast with almond butter.
Conclusion
It is important to limit highly processed and sugary snacks, as they can lead to energy peaks and troughs and disrupt your sleep cycle. Caffeine and alcohol, can interfere with your sleep quality, so it may be best to avoid those.
Late-night snacking's impact on your body varies depending on the quality and quantity of food you eat at dinner. While certain foods can disrupt sleep and cause digestive issues, others can regulate blood sugar levels and aid recovery from exercise. It's always better to try to avoid eating large, heavy meals or ultra-processed foods high in calories and added sugar before bed. If you are hungry at night, eat moderate amounts of nutritious whole foods containing nutrients that support healthy sleep and satisfy you. (Source: eatingwellcom)

Are you a late night snacker? ⠀ Maybe you're not even hungry.. but somehow you find yourself lingering in the kitchen after dinner, snacking mindlessly. Next thing you know, you've consumed an extra 500-1,000 calories. ⠀ 🍿 I used to do this ALL OF THE TIME. I didn't even realize it was happening until it was too late. If this sounds like you, know that you are not alone. Late night snacking is a very common problem.. and honestly I am still guilty of doing it sometimes! ⠀ 💎 But over time, I have gathered a handful of strategies to help you out & I wanted to share them with you!👇🏼 ⠀ ⏰ Adjust your meal times & eat dinner later. Instead of eating dinner at 6pm, try for 7 or 8pm so that by the time you finish eating, you don't have much time before bed to get hungry again. ⠀ ⏳ Wait 20 minutes. Stay busy & distracted. Most times we are just bored…our instinct is to eat because it's enjoyable & will fill the time. Instead of heading to the kitchen, call a friend, go for a walk, read a book, spend time w/ family, etc. ⠀ 📝 Decide an eating window that you won't eat outside of. Make a rule for yourself, I won't eat past ___ pm and try sticking with it! ⠀ 💧 Drink sparkling water, a cup of decaffeinated tea or just plain ol' water! Sometimes you are just thirsty. Try filling up on calorie free beverages before you opt to eat snacks before bed. ⠀ 🍖 Be sure to include plenty of protein & fiber in your diet, which will keep you full! This will prevent you from wanting to snack after dinner. ⠀ 🚰 Brush your teeth immediately after dinner. It will trigger you to think you are done eating for the day, & let's be real - who wants to go through the floss/brush ritual twice?! #snacking #latenightsnacking #latenightsnackingproblems #healthyeating #healthyeatinghabits #healthyeatingideas #healthyeatingtips #healthyeatingplans #healthyeatingrecipes #healthyeatingchallenge #healthyeatinglifestyle #healthyeatingmadeeasy #healthyeatings #healthyeatingforlife #healthyeatingforkids #healthyeatingweek #healthyeatingmotivation #healthyeatingkids #healthyeatingjourney #healthyeatinghealthtliving #healthyeatingplate #healthyeating101 #healthyeatinghabit #healthyeatingblog https://www.instagram.com/p/CFWQ27HJhE3/?igshid=p5uhsa9fpnvh
