I should be studying new tence for greek now, but as I feel horrible and probably failed my latin test (again), I'd rather write you about my latin dictionary.

My family is full of deep hidden traumas and issues. They don't like talking about many things and I don't want to ask, because I prefer to find out this kind of stuff by myself and I know we all have tendency to lying. Turns out my dictionary is part of these family mysteries.

Latin isn't something popular in my country. Not many kids learn dead languages before going to university. Also at university not everyone has this course. Surprisingly, in the last moment, I decided to apply to high school with advanced latin program. I got in and my mom gave me "her" old latin dictionary.

Two years later I had to have my ID done and this is how I discovered my father's name, which is important for the end of this story.

Months passed and during some boring class I was looking through the dictionary. On the first page, I've never opened before, I found my father's signature. This was his dictionary and this is only one thing in my life connected to this man. I don't feel bad about it, It's kinda poetical though. Only thing that reminds me about having a father is overused latin dictionary from 80s with coffee stains and fading notes.

Now we coming back to failing greek.

greek/latin homework on the run?

so you’re thinking to yourself “but i don’t know all the words in greek and latin, how am i possibly going to do this howework? plus, perseus and william whitaker’s are formatted terribly for mobile, but this coool smart phone i have should be able to help me!”

have i got news for you

there are actually some pretty decent (aka super useful) dictionary apps out there for ya (disclaimer: i’m an android user so i have no idea which of these carry over to apple)

in fact, someone made a william whitaker’s app, and yes, it’s free. it’s called (you guessed it) Whitaker’s Words by Ian D. Scott.

there’s also a version of the Liddell Scott that’s free (and once you download it, you don’t need internet to use it, but it won’t parse words for you, which is great if you are okay at unparsing words you don’t know, and hard if you’re really new to greek. actually it also claims to have syntax and i haven’t fully explored that side bc i’m reading a lot of homer and don’t need help with syntax so much) it’s called Ancient Greek Lexicon & Syntax by Ben Linskey.
