I think of these maduros as a living breathing painting in the pan filled with my ancestry. A multi sensory medium, I wish you could all smell and taste. I needed comfort food tonight, maduros, (fried plantains) made the way my mom, Lucy and her mother, my abuela Altagracia made. Watching them sizzle, seeing how they begin to brown to golden sweetness brings me back to our Jackson Heights kitchen. I love my family’s food culture. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like going to Latino restaurants, It feels like I’m betraying a piece of myself, compromising a pact. My mom’s side Dominican, Puerto Rican, Sephardic (Canary Islands and Spain) and my father’s side, Venezuela, Gibraltar and Spain. The foods we grew up with can have a profound impact on our spirits in times of stress. This right now makes me elated. I can feel my abuela’s presence, hear her novellas on the TV, her laughter. Food has become such a balm for so many of us during quarantine, especially the foods filled with love and happy memories. What are your comfort foods? Sending you all some virtual maduros tonight! #nancyrodrigoart #latincooking #maduros #dominicanfood #puertoricanfood #plantains #friedplantains #comfortfood #happymemories #foodculture #homecooking #vegancooking #latinxartist #cookingartist #brooklynfoodie #queerartist #artistsoninstagram (at South Slope, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDh5Egolx-t/?igshid=1avj0g68v5zwk

Cooking is such an important part of someone’s culture. It is a form of expression which helps tell a story.
It reflects the traditions and cultures of a country. Through food, we are able to connect with and learn more about others.
I am of Cuban and Venezuelan descent. Growing up in a Hispanic household, cooking was something that brought my family together. I’ve learned how to cook by seeing how my parents and grandparents cook and season their foods and trying it myself until I get it right.
Both cultures have such unique dishes and desserts to offer. I want to be able to share a part of my culture with others by sharing the recipes and tips I’ve learned from my family and others who grew up around the same culture and cuisine.
Though it may seem intimidating at first, learning to cook different dishes can be extremely rewarding and fun. I want to inspire others to learn more about different cultures while making new dishes.
This blog will include recipes, tips and simple instructions for cooking some of my favorite Latin foods. Read on to get a taste of where I’m from!
