This Teen Crossed the Border so Her Dad Could Be the First to See Her in Cap & Gown

Leslie Silva knew a part of her would be missing when she walked across the stage to get her diploma from Eastlake High School.

“Leslie Silva knew a part of her would be missing when she walked across the stage to get her diploma from Eastlake High School. That’s why two hours before her commencement ceremony, she crossed the Ysleta-Zaragoza International Bridge into Juarez to see her dad before graduating. ‘My dad was deported three times for trying to come back to his family,’ she wrote on Twitter. ‘Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it it to any of my sisters’ graduations, including mine, so I gave him the honor to be the first to see me before I walk the stage.’”

Felicidades to all the graduates! Each time I see Latinx and POCs graduating, I feel so proud. I know many of us had to overcome more systemic and oppressive barriers than our white peers. For a lot of us our degrees and diplomas are a thank you gift to our parents’ sacrifices. Our education is a privilege and key we will use to open doors for our people. There were many times you could have given up, but the resiliency in your veins and your purpose kept you going. Si se puede, si se pudo, y se va seguir pudiendo! ps.
