The Mosley Review: Black Panther
Time and time again Marvel has delivered a stellar film after another. From Iron Man to The Avengers to Captain America: Civil War, this universe has grown expositionally. We've gone to space and different dimensions, but we've never explored the biggest kept secret on Earth and that is the land of Wakanda and it was exactly what I dreamed to see. This film is not only one of the most important films to made, it is one of the most iconic and important characters Marvel has ever brought to life on screen. The representation of African culture, heritage and tradition is on full display and even though it may be based on the comic book, it feels real and it is all gorgeous. What Marvel does expertly is delivering human stories for the heroes and they nailed it once they brought in one of the greatest filmmakers our time to bring life to this story. Ryan Coogler is a director who brings humanity to all of his films and we can relate to every character in his stories, whether they are the lead, secondary or even the villains.
This film features a strong all black cast and every one of them were outstanding! Chadwick Boseman has always been amazing and as T'Challa, he shows a man not ready to be king and throughout the film he portrays the heart of the characters resolve, nobility and willingness to learn from the past King's mistakes in order to forge his own kingdom. Boseman's charisma, charm and the way he walks into a room with such power and regalness is astounding and it shows he has a firm grasp on the character. Danai Gurira was strong, deadly and a badass as Okoye. She steals and commands every scene she is in and her chemistry with every character in the film was great. Lupita Nyong'o was excellent as Nakia because she brought out the heart and softer side of story while still being a force to be reckoned with. I loved Letitia Wright as Shuri and when I say this film has a James Bond element, it's because of her. She was hilarious and brilliant in every scene and she is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters of the MCU. Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker will always be a strong presences on screen and as Ramonda and Zuri, they are some of the biggest parts in the T'Challa's development in being a king. Daniel Kaluuya is growing to be one of my favorite actors and as W'Kabi he was exceptional. Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue was perfectly scummy and dirty. Martin Freeman was great as always as Agent Everett K. Ross. Now the only actor in the film that was as outstanding and nearly steals the film is Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger. Jordan has the ability to lock your attention the moment he is on screen and his intensity and charisma made him one of the best characters and most memorable villains the MCU has ever seen. He has the best fight scenes in the film and some of the best dialogue between him and Boseman. His motivation for his warpath and is tragic and actually justified which makes him one of the most dangerous villains.
The score by Ludwig Göransson was brilliant and captured the sound of the African nation while delivering some great themes and elegance to the ancestral plane scene. The film is visually stunning with such vast number of colors and how all the different tribes are represented through them. The action in the film is excellently directed and choreographed in a way that you know where you are in the space. Writer and director Ryan Coogler has carved out the beginnings of a career that is only going up from here and I thought Creed was his best film and I think this one almost knocks that film out of the park. This is yet another fantastic film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first film of 2018 that I declare to be one of the best.
