I admit, that’s a topic I know a lot less about. I’ve been reading several things about the Jewish and early Christian history in the Holy Land recently, and reading Boyarin (he has fascinating thoughts) so this has been on my mind. I haven’t written anything about Mithraism or Christmas… but hey, Christmas is far enough away that I have time to research! 😆
However yeah, people really overstate the mythological parallels. The dying-and-rising god motif is real, but usually cyclical and Persephone-like connected with the cycle of the seasons in some manner, but. Nearly every god people claim had a virgin birth… did not. They just didn’t. Hot take I think more people should say that Jesus’s virgin birth was stolen from the Maya hero twins Huhnapu and Xbalanque, whose mother was impregnated because a skull spit on her hand.
