Sam looked down into his coffee cup. The hands curled around it were thin. Tapered fingers threaded through the handle, thumbs stroking the kitschy, upbeat saying on the front. Something about smiling and sunshine that Daniel had picked up for him on the road. An apology for coming home too late when his mother had called him from the hospital. Almost surely bought from the hospital gift shop, but Sam hadn't minded. He'd been too grateful to have him there at all. Now its cheap paint was chipping and there was more than one chip in the ceramic. Did that mean it was well-loved or over-used?
He's frowning. He knew he was. And it wasn't like Ally was a stranger anymore, but he didn't talk about these things for a reason. Not with Portia, and certainly not with Daniel. He couldn't bear the look on their faces. The way their eyebrows shot up when he said it. Weighing the how before the why and always coming up short.
"It just doesn't come easy." Sam murmured, chancing another glance across the table between them. "I just don't know how to talk about it usually..." Blue eyes drifted to the window over the sink as he chose his words meticulously. "I just... I want a baby." he said after a minute, pulling his hands into his lap, leaving the mug alone on the table. He sat back. "I want to have a baby."
