SANDRA: Who’d have thought you two were together at Hendon? CONWAY: And what’s that supposed to mean? SANDRA: Well, Don’s taken care of himself, hasn’t he?

Bit of a continuity glitch in this one, as Derek’s wife is called Jean in series eleven, but worth it for the renamed Sandra telling Charles exactly what she thinks of his lack of support for Derek! Some interesting age stuff, too. Ben Roberts was about 48 here and Billy Murray about 57, but they were at Hendon together and Sandra Conway’s comment suggests that they’re close in age. Earlier in the season, Don was described as fortyish, but I believe Derek was meant to be about 52 going by early writers info, so does that make Don officially early 50s too? (Personally, I only take stuff stated/shown on screen as canon, which means for me they’re both early forties, I guess, and looking terrible for their age.) [/age ramble]

A nice juxtaposition here between the awards ceremony and Tony facing his disciplinary board, and the brilliant irony of Don being awarded a long service and good conduct medal while a Hendon chum is under CIB investigation from Don’s Hendon girlfriend.

Guest appearances from Christopher Timothy (who will always be James Herriot to me, even if he is playing a bent copper here), Samantha Bond, Gemma Craven, and Melanie Kilburn—doing a fantastic turn as Derek’s wife prior to becoming Laura Bryant.

12.38 A Hornet’s Nest

A bit of a locked room mystery episode. CID raid a burglar’s home and find him unconscious in his bed, despite the fact that the house was locked and bolted from the inside. A (very loud) guest appearance from Melanie Kilburn (later Laura Bryant).

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 351

(You don't need the real/fake Gabriel reminders now surely...!)

June is angry that The Fake Gabriel (TFG) hasn't told Sheelagh about him using someone elses identity by now and reminds him of her threat. "I can see how telling your fiancée that you've been living under your brothers identity for the last couple of years might be a little tricky." (again here we are with facts that don't line up with that service record in TFG's personal file). June asks Smithy how the victim is and he feels guilty but knows he can't tell her incase they're wrong and besides - if he is who have they been working with for the last 2 years? They arrange to meet after work and do some digging.

June has CCTV for the front of the station when TRG came in and asked for her (not that she knows that last bit), she asks Laura to watch it and find a good shot of his face, wanting it released to the relief and the press. "Someone's got to know who he is!" She takes it to Smithy and they discuss what to do. Laura says tell her their suspicions and hope she'd recognise him if she met him (awkward one, she might but it was a different actor at the time 🤣😉) If he is just 'a random nutter' then they say sorry, we got it wrong. Slight problem though... they're not meant to know she has a son in the first place. Laura says they have to tell her as it's no way to find out your son might be dying from a press relief. If they're wrong they have to take it on the chin and face the consequences. Smithy thinks about it and agrees, but says they're going to leave nothing to chance.

Smithy and Laura track June down in a quiet office and go to speak to her. Laura tells her what happened and that TRG asked for her and said his name was Gabriel Kent. Smithy gently tells her he knows she has a son but not to worry because it's not common knowledge but his name is- "Gabriel Kent" June finishes, looking like she's seen a ghost. Laura describes him and June tells them the man working with them is not her son, nor is he Gabriel Kent. She confirms that Gabriel definitely spoke to him and Laura says yes, for at least 10 minutes. "I've got to see him!" she insists, leaping to her feet as Smithy agrees and drives her to the hospital. She freaks out outside but Smithy reassures her and slowly she enters the room and looks at the man in the bed, conforming through her expression and tears that she knows that it is TRG. She confirms to Smithy outside that it is her son and that she was just 16 - telling him the entire story, including TFG being his brother and using his identity. And that she knew... (though they whitewash the whole incest that never was thing out - thankfully! I don't think JY wants to remember that!)

If it came out, June would lose her job so Smithy thinks and tells her they should spin it so that she wouldn't be fired. He insists that TFG has ruined enough peoples lives and he won't let him continue.

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 350

The Fake Gabriel Kent (TFG) goes in to see The Real Gabriel Kent (TRG) and stalks in purposely, only to spot Yvonne standing guard over him. They still have no idea who he is and he's apparently still critical. A second guard takes over and Yvonne goes to see Dan who is fine and thankfully it was mostly just a flesh wound.

Adam is back at the helm at Sun Hill and he prepares uniform for an investigation into what happened. The Independent Police Complaints Comission want to satisfy themselves that there was nothing they could have done to stop the seige from happening (get rid of Amanda sooner! ahem!) and who the man who got shot is.

TFG has his TRG's phone and wallet in his locker. Laura tells Smithy that the man who got shot is 'just some nutter' according to Gabriel who appeared at the front desk asking for June and calling himself Gabriel the day before. Smithy casually asks what happened and Laura tells him TFG said he'd deal with it, spoke to him for about 10 minutes and that's all she knows - other than she doesn't think June heard about it.

Smithy speaks to TFG and asks him about his 'alter ego' from the day before. TFG brushes it off as someone who copied him from one of the estates he was on and tells him he only spoke to him to read him the riot act and get rid of him. Smithy is obviously suspicious and doesn't buy it for a second, telling TFG that they'll be running his picture through the databases so they'll soon know who he is.

Smithy later looks through TFG personal file... and someone's done a bit of a booboo considering he joined as a probationer. Suddenly he's now been at 4 other stations and joined the service 9 years ago? Doesn't quite gel with the background and stories that were given for TFG through the show.

TFG confronts Laura and he asks her what she said to Smithy and she tells him she only told him the truth. He tries to intimidate her but it doesn't work - especially as Smithy sees and calls him off. Smithy takes Laura to his office, making out it's to discuss some leave she requested. Laura admits he threatened her and didn't like that she'd told the truth to the IPCC or Smithy. He asks her if she's sure she told TFG that TRG had asked for June and she says yes. Smithy informs her that TFG said that she hadn't. He suggests they compare notes on TFG. Laura tells him about the Coal Lane Estate posting and says he can be 'scary weird'. Smithy agrees and asks her to keep something to herself before he tells her about June's past and her having a son called Gabriel Kent. Smithy suggests what if it's not PC Gabriel Kent but that that man who came in the day before really is who he says he is? "So who's PC Kent?" "I don't know... but lets hope the bloke in ITU pulls through so we can find out."
