REVIEW: Matt Olo-Whaanga, KJ Apa, Timena Apa and  Tupa’i Keneti Apa “Euphoria”

As the world starts to feel like it may be ending, Euphoria is released at the nick of time. With its serene and hypnotizing nature, this song commands you to just stop and listen. Take a load off, kick off your shoes, and maybe find a shady tree to lie under to appreciate the song’s effect.

Nostalgic about a less catastrophic political climate, this song takes me back to a simpler time. Maybe I’m taken back to my childhood, but as I listen to the swaying melody, I’m encapsulated in a moment that I, perhaps, once took for granted. This moment was so blissful and fleeting that I simply didn’t have the time, or the care, to take conscious note of its beauty.

The inspiring lyrics and raw vocals, composed by Timena Apa and performed by Matt Olo-Whaanga, will take you back to THAT moment and remind you of the euphoria you once felt. The melancholy production, produced by KJ Apa and Tupa’i Keneti Apa, will comfort you in the knowledge that this memory has come and gone, and now you are changed. However, the euphoria of these memories stay with you, as the lyrics reveal, 

“Ecstasy remains / A state of mind”

As the instrumental crescendo builds, I am falling deeper into my own nostalgic euphoria. The energy of the song begins to pick up, as if mirroring my own reminiscence, and at the same time, building the frustration that I’m feeling about how the world no longer feels like the same place it once was. 

“How do I stay here / How do I / Make these seconds play a billion times” 

The lyrics penetrate through my very core. How do I stay euphoric in a world full of hate? (The answer, of course, is playing this song on repeat, but that’s beside the point).

In an instrumental climax, my frustration is finally met with a much-needed release of emotion and energy in the form of a screeching electric guitar, played by KJ Apa. A quick side note, as someone who is somewhat of an ambient music connoisseur, I have seldom heard an electric guitar solo of this caliber in any other ambient music song. This was a bold move, but decidedly an excellent choice. This solo is just icing on the cake in an already blissful piece, and a great way to give the song an exciting peak. But I digress.

Get ready to feel some feels, because this song will catapult you into your own psyche, whether you’re ready or not. Don’t be afraid when euphoria begins…

WHY WE MUSYC: Lexi Norton

For me, MUSYC is like breathing. You know when you're going through something and you have that sensation of cities collapsing inside of your chest? It's like you're lungs are on fire yet they feel so incredibly cold at the same time? When I write music all of that goes away for me - it's this incredibly therapeutic process that I lose myself in. I'm able to take whatever tragedy that's going on inside of myself (big or small) and put it into the music. I suppose that's why a lot of the material I write comes off very bleak or sad but that's because music has always been an outlet of expressing my deepest emotions. And once all of it is left in a song - I feel like I can breathe again. 

For Lexi Norton, the internet was an important tool that catapulted her success in the music industry. She began recording vocals in her best friend’s garage and reaching out to other artists via her social media platforms for collaborations. By sharing her music and networking with various artists in the online community, she met the other half of her project ECHOS. For the last five years, they have been building their sound as well as growing a strong team of like-minded individuals. Norton reflects, “One thing I've learned about the industry is that it's very important to surround yourself with people who see your vision and strive on the daily to help make that vision come to life.”

WHY WE MUSYC: Eric May

I've been working independently in this industry for the better part of seven years. It all came as a complete accident actually, as I was originally writing fiction and decided to try my luck writing album reviews. My reviews admittedly might not be as detailed as some of the larger ones you'll find on the web, but I more or less have always given an observation of each record and the tracks that stood out or just didn't really do much for me, because that's how I am as a listener. Music has always been a part of my life, ever since I was old enough to walk. I was raised as part of the MTV generation and those music videos really instilled something in me that I still carry around today – namely, a love for all kinds of music. Most metalheads would never realize that before I had the door opened up to heavier music approaching my teenage years, I was a pop fanatic. I couldn't get enough of the boy and girl bands of the era. I still know many of those songs by heart, and singing them as much as I did gave me a bit of practice in tone and pitch for my own act. I still have a love for classic eighties music as well as some modern pop, regardless of the fact that heavy metal and rock-based music will always be my first love. Goth rock and electronic (currently becoming a synth-wave nut) came much later. Even early 8-16 bit chiptunes were something that I love and it's now becoming apparent that other musicians feel the same. I suffer from daily anxiety and music is my replacement for medication. It is how I handle all of the stress that can come from day-today activities and it keeps me sane. Music is literally, my drug.

Eric May has many roles and accomplishments in the music industry. He is the owner and operator of The Grim Tower, a website that reviews, interviews and  features opinion pieces on heavy metal. He is also writer for The New Noise Magazine, and is also known for being the vocalist/lyricist for the independent metal act, Torii. He has worked with several notable musicians in the mainstream and independent scene, and has covered over five-thousand releases. When he’s not getting involved in his music community, he is also passionate about games, books and movies.

WHY WE MUSYC: Laura Hahn

I create, therefore I am. Producing art and music is something that is intrinsically part of who I am. The passage of time decorated and measured by sentient sound is something I’ve always felt connected to, and connects me to the music community. I am often struck with electric inspiration and have to scramble to find a pen to write down some lyrics, or pick up my guitar and sing a new melody. This is how it’s always been for me, an out-pour of creative energy. I could never view creating music as a chore or an obligation, and in that way, I know that music is something I’ll have for the rest of my life, regardless of where life takes me.

Laura Hahn is a folk/acoustic singer-songwriter by day and the voice of electronic music by night ... also not to mention, the newest member of the That’s Why We Musyc team! Her collaborations include those with CloZee, Ficci, Govinda, and many more notable electronic music producers. Based between Los Angeles and Humboldt County, Hahn finds inspiration in both the life of the city and the calm of nature, and the beauty of California itself. When she’s not producing music for the masses, she’s getting her degree in physics and astronomy, and advocating for social justice.
