One of the ultimate moments of my prime time has to be ‘Studio Magazine’ in Paris assigning me to shoot the Cannes Film Festival in May 2001. All expenses. All access. Full party privileges. I was more than ready to photograph subjects outside the R&R sphere. During those 10 days I shot 100’s of the biggest stars and purveyors of the dark arts to create our visual story. I loved every second. Given what great photos went out into the world from this one giant assignment of actors, directors and movie world associated folk who right then were at their own pinnacle, more should have been made of this moment. A powerful agent would have helped, and led to greater opportunities but some bad ‘photo agent’ experiences by this time put me off. Fast forward to perusing the media the other day to see that the ‘Mulholland Drive’ premiere was 20 years ago!! Hard to believe so much time has passed, as it seems like only yesterday I was sat at that very premiere close to the whole cast watching this masterpiece unfold on screen for the first time. The excitement of the moment didn’t allow deep analysis at the time; it was only later upon repeat viewings that the moment was realized that I had witnessed the unveiling of a true masterpiece. The morning after that premiere we were to shoot the portraits of some of the cast plus Lynch himself in one of the rooms at the top of The Carlton Hotel. These two were a total joy to be around. Warm, flirty and open to my direction even though I had only 5-10 minutes. I didn’t matter because as soon as I saw this moment through the lens I knew it was gold. A moment I’ll always cherish.
