The Misadventures of Laura Silver, is an episodic video game released just this August 14, 2019 by Turkish indie game developer Studio Attic Salt that upon first glance, would make you curious as to what lies in store. Well, I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed.
The Good
As the developers of this game have promised, it’s chock-full of choices that branch out into numerous different scenarios and thus, would ultimately lead to different endings and, quite possibly, game over screens—yes, the choices you make may eventually lead you to your doom or rather, Laura’s doom. But that’s not the only hook this game has.
The minigames introduced were quite unique, piecing together events that would make those who are used to glancing over details and the plot regret ever doing so.
The plot of chapter one was cliché in some parts whilst subversive in others but still engaging enough to keep you on the edge of your seat and keep playing. The personalities of the titular character, Laura, and her sidekick-partner, Cooper, as well as their Holmes-Watson dynamic are a welcome sight. As for the other characters of the premier chapter, they have enough of a personality to keep the story going and the players entertained.
The hand-drawn digital art style of the artists as well as the setting was quite a splendid sight, to be perfectly honest. The environment, while a bit cramped and only a few locations were drawn, was enough to establish the mood of the world of Laura Silver. Each character has their own unique pose that, while lacking in variety, makes up for their numerous facial expressions that were so intriguing, I could admire the little eyebrow raise of Laura or the nervous smile of Cooper all day long.
The music was engaging and immersive and sometimes… stressful in a good way. The brass instruments and jazz are always a win in my book. The typewriter voice of the characters, while unexpected, gave the game a certain charm. Each character has their own unique sound, from the normal sound of a typewriter being tapped away, to a rapid-fire sound of the typebars clashing against the platen.
The Bad
Despite all the praise I have been giving this game, I still have to look at the downsides of such a good-erm, potentially good game. As you play through the minigames, you would feel that some parts of it was leading you by the nose and you’ll feel like you’re on rails or on training wheels. While that was to be expected for a visual novel, it wouldn’t hurt to penalize the player for choosing the wrong sequence rather than outright saying this or that isn’t the way.
While I did praise the typewriter voice of the characters and the unique quirks they have as they speak, they could also do well with actual voices. But that’s just my preference, but I also like that it’s up to the interpretation of the player as to how they could possibly sound like.
The overall plot, while I liked it and the direction it’s leaning towards as it goes along, was kept vague until the middle-late part of the first chapter so the pacing felt a little slow. As did the dialogue which sometimes felt cheesy and predictable.
All in all, I’m going to give this game a hard, solid slap on the hat screaming “YES!!!”
It’s new, it’s fresh, it piqued my interest, considering it’s made mainly by three people and a handful of helpers. I’m definitely going to play it again to see the other endings I might have missed as well as the other Chapters as soon as they release it.
