Title: Nightmares Series: Tales of the Abyss Pairing: Luke fon Fabre/Tear Grants Description: {Super Post-Game and vague spoilers} Luke’s being haunted with nightmares, but it isn’t just him either. Author’s Note: Hi I’m tired and it’s 2am and I’m going to bed, so this might be terrible and short, but it’s a start to get me out of this damn block.
Just because it had passed long since – it didn’t mean that it didn’t still haunt him. It had been long enough since the events of Akzeriuth, and no matter how much time seemed to pass, the memories remained vivid while everything else seemed to fade. No matter how much time seemed to pass, while he didn’t want to forget, he couldn’t forget – and it was as simple as that. He could deal with it in the day, but everything just became a nightmare once his eyes closed for sleep, everything just became more than he could sometimes handle.
With a sharp breath, the redhead quickly sat up from where he lay. He panted, trying to wipe away the cold sweat from his forehead. It wasn’t really unusual for him to have another nightmare about back then, and it wasn’t unusual for – in the nightmare – him to lose someone or something precious in return. But it felt like they were slowly getting worse…
“… Luke? Are you okay?”
A familiar, sleepy whisper from beside him broke his thoughts and the eerie silence of the room. His head turned, watching as the brunette beside him began to sit up and rub her blue eyes in the dim light of the room, a relieved, subtle smile on his face. He shook his head, putting his head in his hands. There was no point lying about it – this was Tear he was talking about; she would understand even if he didn’t say a word. “I’ve… I’ve had another of those dreams. But this time, it was different. It wasn’t about then – not really. It was about… now.”
“It’s okay, Luke. Listen to me – it was just a dream. You’re here now.” Tear’s eyes were glistened with a haze of worry as she looked over to him, gently giving one of his hands a squeeze. “You’re here, and you’re safe.” It did hurt her slightly to see him like this – completely the opposite to his usual optimistic self, but there was no doubt that he, a like everyone else, had his demons.
“I know it’s stupid –“
“It’s not stupid –“
“–because I’m an adult! I shouldn’t be having nightmares –“
“Luke. Even Guy’s and Jade’s memories haunted them as adults. But it’s happened. There’s nothing either of us can do about it now. All we can do is look towards the future, together. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could see a future with you,” the brunette stated quietly, making sure to look him in the eyes as she said it. “But I love you, and I’ll protect you if need be.”
With a more secure yet small smile curved onto his lips, he gave her hand a squeeze. “I know. I love you too.” He leant towards her, his forehead resting on his own as he looked towards her. It wasn’t just him anymore. He was surrounded by people, his family, his friends, his wife, his –
Suddenly, a knock on their bedroom door sounded. He quickly pulled back, watching as slight light poured into the bedroom as the door creaked open ajar to show a child, grasping onto a plush toy in the form of what seemed like a cheagle.
“Mommy? Daddy?” the voice of the young male child called quietly into the room, holding onto the plush in his arms even tighter.
“What’s the matter?” Luke asked back, the smile still securely curved onto his expression, even if no one could exactly see it clearly.
“I-I… erm… I had a bad dream and… I don’t wanna sleep by myself…” the boy’s voice hesitated as he continued to trail off midsentence. “Can I sleep with you and Mommy instead? I-if that’s okay…”
Without a moment’s hesitation, watching Tear’s expression out of the corner of his eye, the boy’s father gestured his head beside him. “C’mon then.”
It wasn’t more than a few seconds until the door once again closed, and a small figure began to climb onto the couple’s bed, eventually making his way in between them. Tear and Luke shifted accordingly, draping the bedcovers over him as their child lay between them.
“Good night, Mommy. Good night, Daddy. Thank you for letting me.”
“You’re most welcome. And you know that no matter what happened in your nightmare, me and your mommy would protect you, right?”
The boy nodded, letting out a very soft, “yeah.”
“Now get some sleep,” Luke muttered, trying to keep his voice as quiet as possible so that only his son could hear. “Or your mother will end up singing us both to sleep.”
“Luke, I heard that,” Tear said as sternly as she could, but she couldn’t help but to smile, listening to the light giggle of the child beside her.
“No, you didn’t.”
“Idiot.”
