Just saw this article that highlights where the writers went wrong...
Well, I wouldn't say annoying... she's really just an absolute mess. I could write a 2,000 word essay on Laurel Lance and why she failed to engage audiences, but suffice it to say that
(1) they did a terrible job creating the character (the bitter, hostile ex-girlfriend? This is your set up for an epic romance? Sounds more like an episode of Jerry Springer...)
(2) they didn't cast the right actress (Katie was great as Ruby, but we weren't supposed to really root for her)
(3) they didn't give her vulnerabilities that would endear her to the audience
(4) she banged Oliver while with Tommy ("Radioactive" playing during the love scene should be a sign that Laurel and Oliver should never have sex... ever... it's almost worse than when Angel loses his soul for banging Buffy [who I should note was underage and naive and already has daddy issues an my preference for Spike has nothing do do with this comment]
(5) is kind of a not nice person, even though she fights for justice in the courtroom (see: pre-3x09 "The Climb" interactions with Felicity and Diggle; after they turned into Team Laurel cheerleaders and I suspect were really pod people); her version of "justice" more often translates to self-righteousness in a very unattractive way
(6) comparison was inevitable, and Sara and Felicity were so awesome they took over the show (and were so much more fun to watch than Laurel's addiction spiral... which would actually make sense in terms of real mental illness if they came out and said she's bipolar)
(7) further, any role Laurel could have played in Oliver's "Hero's Journey" was completely usurped by Sara and Felicity in season 2 and she didn't have a reason to be in the story - in fact, she hinders both the show and Oliver's narrative. Put her on a bus; send her to Gotham and have her come back when legal advice is needed (Katie has been rocking the Badass, Sassy Lawyer Thing - play to her strengths)
(8) put on the mask way too soon. She didn't "earn" it. Having her get beat up one or two times and then suddenly have her able to take on a trained assassin is not the equivalent as showing her ability as "gradually" improving
(8.5) as the city's DA, the time she had to train with Wildcat was limited and not enough for her to be in the field, even with "self-defense training;" it's the same problem with Nyssa training her - with the amount of hours she could realistically put in it's physically impossible to have the strength, coordination and muscle memory to fight, so either she suddenly got slayer powers, or they jumped the gun and Oliver was right - she had no business being in the field trying to deal with her sister issues by running around in a dominatrix jumpsuit
(9) attempts to make her likable and sympathetic haven't gone over well (changing her status as the love interest was a big step forward, but otherwise see: losing Tommy and spurring the addiction arc; making her angry all the time while seeking revenge for her sister; putting the mask on before it was earned and thus undermining the five years of hell Sara and Oliver went through to gain their ability; inorganically integrating her as part of Team Arrow by having Diggle and Felicity suddenly be cool with her even though she's never really shown them much human courtesy)
(9.5) and hindering her likability even more (stealing her sister's identity - not only as the Canary but in her relationship with Nyssa; constantly acting without an ounce of common sense and self-preservation; stubbornly continuing to justify her constant acting without an ounce of common sense and self-preservation; lying to her father about Sara's death - really, really not cool, as anyone who has lost a loved one will tell you - and making Felicity culpable in the action)
(10) we are told she no longer will be fighting on a "learning curve" in season 4 and will be actively continuing to work as the DA; again, it will probably be kinesthetically impossible to reach.
I am seriously thinking of writing a thesis on "How to Completely Ruin a Character: A Step-by-Step Guide." Because almost every production decision made about Laurel has been terrible and made her a failure as a leading lady.18.3k Views ·

It honestly bugs me that the fandom that shall not be named is complaining so much about Season 5 just because “Olicity” aren’t together, and yet Oliver/Felicity continue to share so many scenes together in their individual storylines. Laurel and Oliver fans were happy just to have them on screen together, and yet we were the ones who had to lose our favourite character? And again. This push to have “OTA” be the core of the show... they’re finally the only three that ever get mentioned, they’re finally at the center of the focus, and every description that comes out mentions only those three, and these “OTA” and “Olicity” fans are still complaining that the writers are ignoring them? It just continues to remind me that these writers invested in the wrong fandom — the fandom that will never be happy no matter what is given to them, and the fandom that drags the show even when they are getting what they asked for after five god damn seasons. Meanwhile, whether we complained about Olicity or not, we could tolerate it with Laurel Lance as Black Canary. We could deal with Lauriver being friends and only friends. We could have stuck with the show for the length of the series had they just kept Laurel there. But now the show is stuck with viewers who will be given everything they’ve ever wanted, and still go, “but we still want this to happen and it’s not good enough until it does.” It’s just been eating at me at lately how the LL fandom endured Season 4 and were still content up until they killed her off. We sat through Felicity getting twenty-minutes of screentime an episode, Donna Smoak being in every other episode, Oliver and Felicity being in a relationship for fifteen episodes, Laurel not getting a storyline after bringing Sara back, and we would have gladly powered through under this treatment because Laurel was still alive, and yet Olicity fans think Season 5 is treating their couple and their fandom poorly because they’re not back together? It pisses me off.
Toxic people in the fandom

What an original message (how long did it take you to think of this one?)
if laurel fans could stop trying to make other laurel fans feel guilty for choosing not to watch the episode that would be great. please stop trying to force people to do something they don't want to do. that kind of behavior is really messed up and it is not what the laurel lance fandom is supposed to be.
Sorry I've been MIA for awhile, Laurel Lance fandom! School and work have took over my life, I've been very busy for last couple months. But alas, I'm back and ready to start posting more. I'll discuss my opinions on DCTV/DCEU/MCU soon. I love Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Suicide Squad, and Stranger Things so much.
