A red alga found in tropical and temperate seas, from the intertidal zone and down to as much as 65m depth, if the water is very clear.
Named after Louis Jean de La Laurencie (1768-1829), a French Naval officer, and Director of the University of Limoges.
Laurencia is also the host of parasitic red algae in the genus Janczewskia.
