Francesca Hayward and Cesar Corrales after Onegin
25 January 2025
I NEVER excepted this to happen. And a mid-season promotion? Very un-Royal.
Nevertheless, congrats to Melissa!
I am unexpectedly going to be in London for work for a week and half sometime between February 2-15th (I'm from the midwest US). I'm going to do my best to get away for an evening to see Onegin because I REALLY want to see the Royal Ballet in-person for the first time ever. Which cast would you recommend? My first thought was wanting to see Marianela given the choices.....
Given your dates, I would definitely see the Nunez cast personally!
Vladimir Shklyarov in La Bayadere.
I've been watching videos of him and crying. I'm so devasted over this loss.
What is happening in the ballet world this year????
Vladimir Shklyarov, Rest in Peace
RIP Vladimir Shklyarov….
I woke up to the news that beloved Mariinsky Premier, Volodya, has died. I know nothing about the circumstances. I am absolutely gutted. Clearly, something tragic occurred….He was just 39. Shock and disbelief for now. Updates to follow….
I'm beyond pissed with the winter casting. When they announced the upcoming season Onegin was set to start in early january (january 3rd) with Lamb and McRae.
Then, in september, they added Cinderella to the mix instead of a few weeks of the nutcracker and pushed everything backwards and they are no longer casted.
I just wanted to see them dance this roles so much!!!
I understand they revived Cinderella's last year so they want to keep it in the rooster but I disliked it a lot: not only is it really nonsensical without the stepmother but in my opinion the costumes weren't cohesive at all and both things took me out of the dancing
I'm not very pleased with this season either. Onegin is the only ballet I'm really excited to see and I haven't been thrilled by the casting. I'm hoping part 2 of the Onegin season will be better.
I don't remember the announcement of an earlier start to Onegin with Lamb and McRae but I was busy with work and out of the loop for awhile. Honestly with his career seemingly in wind-down mode I would be surprised if he did take on Onegin this year.
I don't like the Cinderella ballet either. There is too much acting and too little dancing.
what‘s your opinion on the royal ballet cast of alice in wonderland?
I really like that they are letting some of the younger dancers take on the role! The Royal only does this sparingly, and I think that Alice in Wonderland is a great tester role to see how dancers would handle principal roles.
Michaela DePrince has sadly passed away at the age of 29
Winter casting for this season!
So uh, that ballet class at the Royal Opera House is probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done.
Plus it’s fun meeting online friends!!
Incredible to be able to rattle off names and ballets to someone IN PERSON and have them know what they’re talking about!
Why do you think bracewell isn’t principal? His listed as one on the RB site and every news outlet etc describes him as one? (No hate I’m just curious if there’s a reason his on your promotion game)
My promotion game was from a few years ago, I just reposted it as I was quite proud of picking out Sissens from an early moment in his career lol
Congrats to all the promoted dancers. Royal Ballet is so top heavy but I guess they have been top heavy for the last five years.
It's so top heavy and it's so MIDDLE heavy! The company should really be structured like a pyramid.
Hi!
I am going to watch Sarah Lamb and Steve McRae on Onegin next year and wanted to ask if you know anything about sending flowers to the dancers. Like when they get bouquets on stage/backstage?
I've loved their dancing for so long and It'll be probably my only chance to watch them before they retire since I'm not from the UK so I wanted to show my appreciation.
Hope you know or can point me towards somewhere I can look it up. Thank you 😘
Hey! I've always wondered this too. I would ask here: https://www.balletcoforum.com/
Many of them are avid long-time goers and someone will probably know something.
Just to say I'm not sure if Lamb and McRae will dance Onegin together next season, due to his ongoing injury problems...
Love the "promotion game" you did with MT and BT dancers! What are your predictions for Royal Ballet soloists/first soloists? Thank you!
Oooh one I feel rather more confident on!
I will do men and women. Each category will be likeliness of being promoted to principal. I will also add some first artists (ok, one). As always this may not be what I want but what I suspect will happen.
NOT IF BUT WHEN:
William Bracewell (Surprised he isn’t already, tbh)
Reece Clarke (Especially because he seems to be the only one Natalia Osipova will dance with)
Anna Rose O’Sullivan (Obviously being curated to be the next female principal, probably on the retirement of Morera. Even more cemented by her Englishness -- the Royal Ballet has gotten flack for lack of English principals in the last few decades)
Joseph Sissens (Am I really saying definitively that this first artist is going all the way to principal? Yes, yes I am.)
ITS POSSIBLE:
Cesar Corrales (They’ve been putting a LOT of energy into him and giving him a lot of opportunities. But these opportunities don’t seem to have gone particularly well)
Fumi Kaneko (I really don’t understand what’s happened her. All of a sudden she just popped out as a contender for principal. I tend to think there will always be someone she just misses out to, but who knows)
Mayara Magri (I just don’t see this as the forgone conclusion others do)
WHO KNOWS:
Luca Acri (I would never have thought this before, but he had some interesting debuts last season)
James Hay (All of a sudden he’s getting these great opportunities? Sort of came out of nowhere)
Beatriz Stix-Brunell (I think her peak has already happened, tbh)
Nicol Edmonds (I think he will go up to first soloist, but there’s just way too much male talent right now to go all the way)
Benjamin Ella (Almost certain will go to first soloist, but doubtful if he will go beyond)
Meaghan Grace Hinkis (I high-key love this dancer. She’s had some really, really interesting debuts. But she also hasn’t had any movement in the company since 2015. I think principal is probably out of sight but there are lots of aging women in the company...)
BABE IT AINT HAPPENING:
Claire Calvert (Has been pretty firmly placed in the soloist category)
Tierney Heap (Hasn’t had any leading roles as a first soloist)
Itziar Mendizabal (Doesn’t have the range to be a principal)
Valentino Zucchetti (I think the recent documentary made this pretty clear. And he’s moved in the direction of choreography pretty significantly. He also dances a lot of ‘character’ roles. But I suppose there’s a slight chance...)
Calvin Richardson (I just really don’t see this happening)
Olivia Cowley (I mean I guess there’s a slight chance she would go up one level? But then again, not at all?)
Isabella Gasparini (Too old)
Tomas Mock (Recently had a promotion and they like to spread them out)
David Yudes (He hasn’t even had a soloist role in at least a year)
WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER:
Yuhui Choe (People who think someone who joined the company in 2002 will get promoted need to stop thinking it will happen)
Melissa Hamilton (Especially because she doesn’t seem to have a ton of company loyalty)
Romany Pajdak (Now this might be controversial. I like her and everyone else fell in love with her during the recent livestream. BUT she was just promoted. And she can’t be promoted straight to principal and the royal likes a few years between promotions. And she’s already in her mid-30s. I just don’t see there being time left for her to go all the way to principal)
Paul Kay (No real promising roles)
Fernando Montaño (I thought he had already left for some reason? He has other focuses now than ballet)
Really pleased how well I did with this. Only one major mistake.
