Before launching the DCU, Zack Snyder directed the film adaptation to the ground breaking DC maxi-series The Watchmen. Prior to this, besides music videos, Snyder had directed the horror remake Dawn of the Dead (2004) and the film adaptation to the Frank Miller comic book limited series 300 (2006). To keep with the mature theme of the series, the film was rated R for graphic violence, sexuality, nudity, and language. The movie took place in an alternate 1985 and prior. Like the comic, there were cameos by real world historical figures such as John McLaughlin (Gary Houston), Pat Buchanan (James M Connor), Eleanor Clift (Mary Ann Burger), Richard Nixon (Robert Wisden), Henry Kissinger (Frank Novak), Ted Kopel (Ron Fassler), Lee Iacocca (Walter Addison), Dick Cavett (Ted Cole), John F Kennedy (Brett Stimely), Jackie Kennedy (Carrie Genzel), Andy Warhol (Greg Travis), Truman Capote (Greg Armstrong-Morris), Fidel Castro (John Kobylka), David Bowie (J.R. Killigrew), Mick Jagger (Steven Stojkovic), Brezhnev (Martin Reiss), and Annie Leibovitz (Salli Saffioti). The story was about the heroes Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), and Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) who tried to discover who killed the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and why. In the process they discovered a plot involving Dr Manhattan (Billy Crudup) and Ozymandias (Matthew Goode). While some have criticized Snyder for sticking too close to the source material, the story arc for Dr Manhattan and the reason for the crisis in the 3rd act were altered for the film. The film had a release date of March 6, 2009. Prior to this film, it was adapted as a 12 episode "motion comic" limited series (2008 - 2009), then after this film it was adapted as a live action limited series (2019) and a two-part animated movie (2024).
