Our first Tetanuran! These theropods include almost all of the most famous predatory dinosaurs - T Rex, Allosaurus, Spinosaurus, and all the Maniraptors - and of course, birds. This group evolved in the early or middle Jurassic period, depending on what you classify certain theropods as (Crylophosaurus, for example, could have been a tetanuran - its formal classification is under debate.) They are characterized by having "stiff tails," but really their definition is all theropods who are more closely related to modern birds than to Ceratosaurus. Chuandongocoelurus  was from the Sichuan Province in China, in the Dashanpu and Lower Shaximiao Formations. It dates to 165 million years ago, in the Bathonian/Callovian stages of the middle Jurassic. It was initially classified as a coelurid, however now it is considered to be a close cousin of Monolophosuaurs, both either potentially Megalosauroids or just basal Tetanurans. It is known from a partial skeleton that was a juvenile at its time of death. Little more is known about this carnivore.
