Will we ever colonize the Moon?
A big problem facing any future Moon colonies is radiation exposure. The Moon doesn’t have a magnetic field to shield it like the Earth does, so any time spent on the surface would involve a heavy helping of harmful space rays. To survive & thrive on the Moon, we are going to need an adequate shelter
Hundreds of centuries ago, the Moon was still geologically active, and hot lava flowed on it’s surface. Well actually, just under the surface. The top layer of these lava flows would quickly cool and harden to solid rock when exposed to the conditions of the surface.
But just under this rock layer, hot lava would still flow. As time goes by, these tubes of lava flow slowly drain and cool, leaving a hollow tunnel, and a perfectly level floor of solid rock. Sometimes a section of tunnel would collapse, leaving a hole into the void. On Earth, these holes are what geologists call a “skylight”. In 2008, astronomers located the very first “skylight” on the Moon.
Today, over 200 of these “skylights” have been identified as pits leading to subsurface voids on the Moon. These natural space caves would be an ideal location for a Moon colony. The interiors of such lava tubes would be natural shelter from harmful cosmic radiation & incoming meteorites, and also provide easier access to underground mineral resources.

Pluto’s Cave - c.2021 by Sage Turk 🪨(Mt. Shasta is rumored to have strange energies at its core. Whether or not that’s true, it absolutely has magma at its core - and the remnant lava tubes have formed a portal into the heart of the mountain where if you listen, you can hear it breathe. You might even hear it speak.) #plutoscave #mtshasta #lavatubes #mysticquest #artaday https://www.instagram.com/p/CSI9tz4LE7X/?utm_medium=tumblr
Today we were on #Tenerife having arrived last night from La Palma. Our first stop was #Garachico here we saw how a #lava flow in 1706 AD blocked the port which was a that time capital of Tenerife and a major port linking Spain and the Americas (pics 2&3). We then moved on to Icod de los Vinos where we saw the famous Dragon Tree (pic 4) and had lunch before visiting the nearby Cueva del Viento #lavatubes (pic 1 & 5-7). These lava tubes are the longest in the world outside Hawaii. They lie in 27,000 year old lava that erupted from Pico Viejo (a parasitic cone of Teide). After an excellent underground tour we visited Caldera del Rey, this is a rare example of a felsic phreatomagmatic eruption (pic 8). It began with a trachyphonolitic intrusion that caused small phreatic explosions when it encountered water. This was followed by an intense and sustained eruption with pumice fallout. The eruption ended with a dry eruption that produced pyroclastic flows. From this site we also had great views of Montana de Guaza (pic 9). This is a trachyte tuff cone that formed 926,000 years ago and produced a 100m thick coulee flow. We then travelled down to the port of Los Cristainos which is overlooked by a cinder cone (pic 10) to take the ferry to La Gomera where we will spend the night and all day tomorrow. ʟᴀᴠᴀ ᴛᴜʙᴇs, ʜɪ There are these underground tunnels where lava once traveled through, these are called, Lava tubes, which appear to be caves, but aren't. These can be dangerous to walk through because the to of them can collapse with no warning. In Pic1: after going through the lava tube, Pic2: entrance to the tubes Pic3: what we climbed to get back up once inside. Pic4: on top of the tubes, standing on lava rocks. Glad we got to walk through them and see it in person. #lavatubes #lavatubecave #vacations #deadtravels #hawaii #kona #fun #stonebrewing #bigisland #sunset #lava #lavarocks #bnw #photography #bnwphotography #photooftheday (at Lava Tube Cave) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn524G7BDL4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=yi0t6py7qmpy
