Lavoûte-Chilhac and Saint-Privat-d’Allier
These two villages were our favourites. Lavoûte-Chilhac is built around a bend in the Allier river, so crossing the bridge is necessary to get from one side of town to the other. On the west side is where we found the lovely Restaurant du Pêcheur right on the river, and where we stayed for nearly two hours to enjoy some traditional cuisine and the peaceful setting. Saint-Privat is a popular stop along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, so around 4pm is when the village starts getting busy. But climb up the hill to the small eglise, and you can take in the views in silence.
