dude!! 3 months too late to the answering machine, I'm sorry!
I'm lowkey obsessed with Ethel Cain now, she's an ultimate chill LiS/Nathan/Rachel listen vibe for sure! I LOVE all the songs you mentioned, those are actually my favorites <3 let me list my favorite lyrics from each and how they relate to Nathan/Rachel for me:
Fuck Me Eyes
I think the lyrics are both pretty self-explanatory in how they relate to Nathan/Rachel, but the "they all wanna take her out / but no one ever wants to take her home" always gives me the feels for lost girls like her. I also love how this song has such a positive vibe (written in major key ✌️) despite the fact that the lyrics and message are actually quite ominous/lonely, which gives it this despondent, eerie quality to me
Nettles
So I feel like this song has to do more with soldiers in war, but I tried to select some lyrics that I thought could be interpreted as both Rachel's experiences in the Dark Room and both of their passive suicidality (plus, I love the romanticized image of a graveyard as she sings it - "Lay me down where the trees bend low").
Dust Bowl
The first one feels so Nathan/Rachel - "Pretty boy / natural blood-stained blond" doing a lot of direct work (especially love what 'blood-stained' does in their context), "drive-in slasher flick again / feeling me up as a porn star dies" just feels like a metaphor for Nathan's attraction to Rachel, and the tragedy of the Dark Room. "All you could see was me /... 'Cause you wanted just to tell me who you were" feels to me like Nathan's slight obsession with Rachel, and how I could imagine how he likely latched on to her attention, and felt like he found someone, finally, who would listen to him — esp given how social chameleon-esque Rachel seemed to be.
Thank you so much for this ask and I apologize for responding a financial quarter late 😩
