Is all the best stuff really cheaper at Checkers?
I finally had to go shopping yesterday (my fridge hadn't seen fresh food in weeks), but instead to making my usual trip to Wally World, I drove just a few blocks to the local Checkers.
Anyone who has listened to Lawrence radio knows the Checkers jingle: "All the best stuff is cheaper at Checkers!" So, my bored self set out to test the jingle by comparing Checkers' prices with Wal-Mart's prices.
Yogurt: Checkers, $1.88 for 24 oz (~$0.08/oz); Wal-Mart, $2.18 for 32 oz (~$0.07/oz)
Cottage Cheese (16 oz): Checkers, $1.69; Wal-Mart, $1.78
Philadelphia Cream Cheese (8 oz): Checkers, $1.48; Wal-Mart, $1.98
Sour Cream (24 oz): Checkers, $1.50; Wal-Mart, $2.22
Shredded Parmesan: Checkers, $2.32 (fresh); Wal-Mart, $2.38 (pre-packaged)
90% Lean Ground Beef (1 lb): Checkers, $3.49; Wal-Mart, $4.28
Boneless Chicken Breast: Checkers, $3.23 for 16 oz (~$0.20/oz); Wal-Mart, $5.48 for 26.4 oz (~$0.21/oz)
Garlic: Checkers, $2.98/lb; Wal-Mart, $2.78/lb
Lemons: Checkers, $0.39 each; Wal-Mart, $0.38 each
Fresh Herbs: Checkers, $0.66-$0.86 (local & organic); Wal-Mart $2.88
Clearly, Checkers is the winner with lower prices (much lower in several cases) than Wal-Mart. And although Wal-Mart had better prices on produce, the difference was slight.
Thank you, summer boredom, for saving me both time and money in the future.
