I just miss historical Lafayette posts.
never forget that Gilbert was messed up by spending an entire year in solitary by himself and refused to talk about except to tell eastern state penniteniary that it was a stupid idea
No offense but I heavily identify with that girl that fell in love with Lafayette while her family housed him during the gunshot to the leg at Brandywine and is now a ghost who haunts people looking for Lafayette.
Such are, My Beloved General, the ideas of people who in their emersion from the tomb, want to gather as Soon as possible all the Happiness that is Within their Reach, which However Cannot be Completed Untill they Enjoy the Blessing to Be With You
Post-Olmutz Lafayette to Washington, 6 October 1797
It makes me upset and bitter when people start talking about how America didn’t help Lafayette when he was in prison.
I guess taking in George and keeping him safe and fed and warm and educated wasn’t helping Laf
I guess sending Adrienne and the kids money so they could live while all their property was taken away wasn’t helping Laf
I guess send Lafayette money in prison so he had food and some medical care at least wasn’t helping Laf
I guess planning an escape attempt wasn’t helping Laf at all
I guess the Monroe’s causing a scene both to get Adrienne out of jail and then to help spread the word of how crap the prison was didn’t help Laf at all either.
Wow America really just abandoned that dude in jail and walked away.
Sometimes I question what kind of dad Lafayette was then he goes and writes stuff like “..remember me got the one who was formerly Master Tub, and Now Must Be a Big Boy...” and you realize he was a nerd of a dad. I also just about died when he called Anastasia “my little girl” in that one letter. It’s just so cute and I love it so much.
Do you ever think about how the Lafayette’s were a super close tight knit family?
