something you might not know about quantum mechanics: it’s not hard because it’s complicated. in the grand scheme of physics, the math of it is quite well understood. it’s hard because it’s weird. turbulence is complicated. misplace the last digit of a very long number and your whole simulation comes out different eventually. but it’s intuitive. it makes a kind of natural sense. quantum mechanics is cheap to compute, and with all the randomness most errors you could make were on the table already. but it is so fucking bizarre. it’s the kind of thing that seeing isn’t enough to believe. it presents a world where something can be thrown off course by its other self that could have been but wasn’t. a world where things can exist in hindsight without ever having existed in the present. a world where you shine a light through two slits and spend 200 years arguing about what the fuck happened and how many universes it involved. it’s just weird, okay?

Can anyone give me a Layman’s Terms explanation of copywriting for intents of creating a show?

So on my way to work to stand watch tonight I thought of a really neat way to explain light. I may record a video with drawings explaining this all better.

So what many people probably don’t understand is that all electromagnetic waves are technically “light”. There’s visible light which everyone is familiar with. ROYGBV, the visible spectrum, all of the lovely colors. Most people also know about ultraviolet light - light with a higher frequency than visible light - and infrared light, light that’s lower frequency than visible light and creates heat. 

But most people don’t think of say, x-ray waves as being “light!” But technically they are. X-ray waves don’t travel faster or slower than visible light.

When people think about this they might find it confusing. X-ray waves travel as fast as light? Yep.

So imagine light is like a car traveling on a highway. It’s going the speed of light because that’s the law (ha ha). 

You’ve got your car of say, visible light, going along. Beside it  is another car... a car of x-ray light! And they’re going the same speed, one right next to the other. Now, remember that light can behave like a particle, so we can imagine these cars are photons! Happy little photons of light, doing their thing on the highway.

Now of course there is a difference between visual light photos and x-ray photons, and that’s how much energy they have. Imagine that like... yelling. So our visible light car has occupants who are talking in normal voices, whereas the people in the x-ray care are... screaming.

But you may say, light also behaves as a wave, and don’t x-ray waves have a higher frequency than visible light? Yes! And that’s easy to imagine too!

Let’s say the visible light car - and let’s pick one color since every color has a separate frequency - is orange, and it’s swerving back and forth along the road, but staying in its lane. Nice. Next to it however, is our x-ray light car. It’s swerving a LOT, back and forth across a lot of lanes but - it’s still moving forward at the same speed as the visible light car, so it’s got a lot of movement back and forth! 

Also maybe that’s why the occupants are screaming.
