Latest Yeovil Central layout Tour nobody's interested in!
Not that anyone is bothered, this month's Yeovil Central update: We look behind the scenes, literally, and take a look at the 16 road fiddle
Part One: Bernie Kempinski's O Scale Civil War Model Railroad ! The Aquila Line
One thing about Bernie Kempinski's 1/48 scale layout is that it was standard gauge that won the war for the Union/North -- all the trains and rail equipment were interchangeable -- unlike in the South, where it was a variety of gauges and rail transport couldn't be utilized without transloading everything by hand from one railroad to another. Bernie uses the standard O gauge, which is 1¼" (or 32mm) and is 5-feet in 1/48 scale -- broad gauge! (Standard gauge is 4-feet, 8½-inches) ...this broad gauge would be more accurate if modeling some Southern/Confederate railroads. Accurately 4'8½"-gauged track is called P48 or P:48 but is a real pain to model as it's paradoxically not the standard — the paradox of O scale I guess!
