Personal Pronouns
When I had to memorize all of the personal pronouns in fifth grade, it never occurred to me that someone might be offended. That there were no third person pronouns which categorized a person outside of being male or female other then it. This chart was was just something we all had to struggle to learn. To this day I can still recite the chart burned into my memory,
I, Me, My, Mine We, Us, Our, Ours
You, Your, Yours You, Your, Yours
He, Him, His, She They, Them, Their,
Her, Hers, It, Its Theirs
This list should be expanded to offer gender neutral pronouns that allow people outside of our binary way of thinking the ability to be themselves while still maintaining both their status as an individual and person. Calling someone ‘it’ does not suffice. While new pronouns add one more thing to the list for kids to learn, treating others as people should not be something we need to argue over. Everyone should be allowed to be Himself/Herself/Hirself/Emself/Xemself.
I made him my slave, but by the coyness of his glance has made me his prisoner, so that we are both at once slave and master.
