AG Carinae

10,000 years ago, this star, which shines a million times brighter than our Sun, went through a massive explosive event, throwing out material equivalent to 10 times the mass of the Sun.

That material has now reached 5 light years from the original star, a very rare type of blue variable that goes through these explosive events from time to time.

It is one of the brightest stars in our Galaxy, 20,000 light years away in the Constellation of Carina. Scientists are still not entirely sure of the processes that go on inside the very largest and most massive stars, so study of this and it's famous neighbour Eta Carinae are important.
