Hey everyone I wanted to take this time to inform you earlier this year, the LCME, an organization responsible for medical accreditation in the US and Canada removed the requirement to teach about health care disparities and inequities. What does that mean? Well, Dr. Joel Beverell goes into detail about what it means in this short form video, which is how I was notified of this, (I really recommend you watch his work he puts it better than me) but to simplify it a bit, black patients a lot of the time when it comes to being diagnosed with different conditions often hit a lot of roadblocks or get misdiagnosed because the medical system had someone who doesn't look like them when they were setting up their diagnosis criteria.

I just wanted to bring this up while y'all still have your eyes on me cuz it's really important learning and correcting these disparities are part of the mandatory medical studies so black patients can truly be seen and cared for properly when they are unwell.

MUSC LCME summary

--

Step 1 mean - 223 (nat'l mean 225), 91% pass rate (nat'l mean 92%). That means two things. For the average MUSC student, that means you who are scoring in the 86-90 range, are predicted to have a below average Step 1 score. It also means 14 students from our class will fail Step 1. Good to know. 

One of MUSC's top concerns from their last LCME report was student indebtedness. Direct quote: "have proved to be difficult to overcome."

MUSC department of Veterinary Sciences ranks 7th nationally. Wasn't aware we even had vet students. 

82% of students are satisfied with career planning services. (59% nat'l average) This is true anecdotally too - I feel like everyone loves CiM (seminar series on different medical fields). 

Lots of good stats about the high %age of students involved in summer/M3/M4 research, as well as discussion about the funding opportunities. No data presented on impact of student research, either on student careers or research fields. 

Direct quote, "Years 1 & 2 are designed to protect time for independent study, as well as collaborative learning and study."

82% of MUSC graduates feel they have the skills required to begin residency. (nat'l mean 90%)

For 5 consecutive years MUSC has admitted 10 African-American males. 

Study space is available in the Harper Student Center, Storm Eye Institute, Rutledge Tower, BSB, Cannon Park Place, and in the MUSC hospitals. I study on campus quite a bit and I don't even know where Cannon Park Place is, let alone the study spaces in those other buildings... On the upside, there are scheduled renovations for Walton to add more med student study space.
