Like a phoenix from the ashes, or my dog after she’s had dinner, we’re back with renewed energy! We’ve returned from hiatus to continue sharing webcomics with you and take on this new year!
How else to set the right tone for a new year than with a webcomic about… cryptids? You bet!
Today’s spotlight is on Lochbank Cryptid Society by Ezra W, Xiao Kong, and Danielle Sylvan.
Updates: Sunday Recommended if you liked: Charles de Lint’s “Newford” Series, Twin Peaks, Stranger Things, The X Files, Night in the Woods, Scooby Doo, Hotel Dusk
I have a confession to make about this webcomic from @cryptidsociety… I’m in love with all the characters. Honestly. From the moment Quinn is introduced, to Oliver and Jasper’s descriptions, I felt a lot of feelings about these characters. A combination of “I wish they could be my friend in real life” to “I wish I could date them in real life”. Uh, well, enough about me, let’s get to the real reason we’re here! It’s Wednesday!
Lochbank Cryptid Society is the story of three teenagers who start an after school club to hunt cryptids in their town. Seems simple enough, right? Fortunately for them, they discover a bigger conspiracy than they were expecting.
Lochbank Cryptid Society is a newer webcomic, having just started at the end of July of last year. The narration sets the tone right away: Max colours every description with his own emotions and perspective on the person or event. In addition to this, the colours and lighting add to the atmosphere of a “cryptid hunt”. The comic mixes the spooky and mysterious into the every day elements of school and life and routine in the same way it combines blues and shadows to beige and light when the first cryptid appears.
The art reminds me of playing Nancy Drew, or Hotel Dusk, and it makes me feel like I’m watching a cutscene between missions in a video game. It’s a great feeling because it places the reader closer to the action: somewhere between being on the edge of your seat and feeling at home. The shading and tones give the world a dimension that feels almost too real to be true. Bonus: Max is the most ridiculosly expressive character, which puts an extra level of enjoyment to reading.
The team putting this webcomic together has found their wavelength, and here at Is It Wednesday? we can’t wait to see what happens next to these three cryptid-hunting teenagers!
