Description
The Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5 ) in Doha, Qatar on 5-9 March, 2023 is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to accelerate sustainable development in the places where international assistance is needed the most - and to tap the full potential of the Least Developed Countries helping them make progress on the road to prosperity.
Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy solutions lies at the heart of sustainable development. With an estimated 488 million people living without access to electricity in the LDCs, and the demand for energy projected to increase, access to sustainable energy is a top priority of the Doha Programme of Action (DPOA) which emphasizes the critical role of sustainable energy in achieving structural transformation in the LDCs. To achieve universal energy access by 2030, LDCs need to rapidly accelerate their pace of electrification, connecting 63 million new customers each year in 2019–2030 compared with their historic pace of 23 million in 2000–2018. Furthermore, the pace of progress in energy access in these countries is facing significant challenges due to climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the Russian invasion of Ukraine which has created uncertainty in global energy markets and pushed energy prices up.
