If my memory serves me well, I believe it was Mr. Lynn in my 8th grade science class at Grier Jr. High School in Gastonia, NC who required us to make a leaf collection, which we compiled in student-sized folders pressed in appropriate sized plastic holders. It was a fun project and in honor of Mr. Lynn, this summer I may occasionally post sample photographs of local leaves.
Below are the leaves of the American Sweetgum tree, and I am delighted to be living among them again because they are native to the Southeastern U.S. In fact, there are many in my neighborhood and around my home. A very attractive tree with characteristic star shaped leaves. In the Fall they drop a spiked fruit that is very effective at spreading new trees and also feeds the local bird population.
