i got a couple of books in the mail — one for grown ups and one for kids lol I borrowed a few german kids books on my library app (libby) and appreciated how simple they are for me and i was able to learn quite a bit. so, i thought a lesson book for kids might be good!

at first glance (auf einen Blick), it looks and feels pretty intense to me.. but that's probably because it's completely in german. the german grammar drills book has english instructions/lessons so it doesn't seem as intimidating.

i also reviewed the noun plurals video from yesterday and then watched this lesson from anja. i think i like learning from two sources because it helps me understand better overall.

what i learned in german heute:

der Stein = the stone

der Teppich = the carpet

der Mantel = the coat

i didn't study much vocab today since i'm trying to focus on noun articles and plurals right now. that's giving me enough Kopfschmerzen at the moment haha it's such a beautiful and interesting language, so i just keep picturing myself being able to hold a conversation and it helps me stay motivated whenever i get discouraged.

january 28-29, 2023 *:･ Es ist das Wochenende!

i stopped by a coffee shop (kaffeestube? cafe?) and it was unusually warm, so i sat outside in the sun. i looked at things around me and said the ones i knew: "Das ist ein Kaffee." / "Das ist ein Tisch." / "Die Sonne ist sehr schön!" / "Das ist ein Baum."

then i looked up the things i didn't know, like cup, chair, ice, lid, etc. it was good practice! i have been studying german for about a week now and i am so glad i have been posting about what i learn each day so that i can look back on it. when i first started, words just looked like random letters - like a code that i'd never be able to break - and now i am able to speak in (very) small sentences :D i'm very happy! Ich bin sehr glücklich!

when i got home, i went over the plural nominativ artikel again because that has been tripping me up a bit. i think i have got it now though. today i am going to review what i learned during the week and watch some vlogs.

Heute morgen, ich sah das vlog. This morning, I watched this vlog.

It has taken me.. 15 minutes to figure out how to write that sentence and I'm not even sure it's correct lol I'm trying not to use google translate because I've heard that it is not completely accurate!

edit // this is the correct way to say/write it: heute Morgen habe ich diesen Vlog gesehen.

This Reddit post was helpful, but I'm not sure how to say "this" in this instance. I went to google translate and it says diesen?

I also printed out some lyrics of a song I've been listening to. From it, I learned that zweimal = twice and dreimal = three times. I'm also picking up on fragen = to ask and seeing/hearing it often.

i watched this german vlog while i was folding clothes, so i wasn't able to see the subtitles, and i could understand quite a few words/phrases !!! i was so happy haha

what i learned in german heute:

da = because

jetzt = now

nicht jetzt = not right now

na ja aber... = well, yes, but...

heute Morgen = this morning

immer so = always like that

der Tee = tea

die Weintrauben = grapes

i also watched this video on noun genders. such as, months, seasons, weather, and currency are usually masculine = der. trees, fruits, flowers are usually feminine = die. metals, countries, hotels are neuter = das.

this morning, i reviewed the lesson on noun genders that i did yesterday and then did the next lesson which was on noun plurals. if you watch this video too, be sure to look at her notes in the description box because she mentions a few important things she accidentally left out of the video!

i also rewatched a couple of vlogs while cleaning and doing laundry and am starting to pick up on more words :D

also, i have to add that learning a language is working my brain big time. i usually have a hard time falling asleep due to anxious thoughts. but since starting german lessons.. i am out in minutes. i hope that continues because it's been amazing.

what i learned in german heute:

Der Verkehr = the traffic (i was translating a few sentences out of a book i am reading, so all these words/phrases are from that)

schlimmsten = worst

und ich hasste = and i hated it

zeitungen = newspapers

das stimmt = that's right

wie bitte? = i beg your pardon?

january 27, 2023 *:･ Es ist Freitag!

i'm posting this on the 28th, but i this is what i studied yesterday. i didn't have time to write a post because our afternoon was hectic with a few after school activities and errands.

so, yesterday i watched anja's nominative case part 1 video and took notes. she explained it very well and i was able to understand! i went around the house asking "Ist das ein/eine ______?" and answering "Nein, das ist kein/keine ______." it was super helpful!

i also wrote out the chart she uses in the video from memory to get that info to stick. we have sliding glass doors in the kitchen, so i get a dry erase marker and use the doors as a big whiteboard haha you can also do this with mirrors if you need a big space to write and don't have a dry erase board.

i also watched a couple of savannah's vlogs and wrote out any words/phrases i was able to pick up on. i really love her vlogs!

i didn't practice any vocab really since i was so focused on nominative case. i'll be working more on that today because i was having a hard time with plurals. sind keine, sind keine, sind keine, sind keine, sind keine. there.. maybe if i type it out a few times i will remember it now :]

february 6, 2023 *:･ Es ist Montag!

i had to take a little Wochenende break from german because i felt like i was just spinning my wheels and not learning. but, i typed Wochenende from memory just now so i'm pretty proud of that lol

i AM learning!!! yay :D

heute morgen, i watched this vlog and ate one of the best ice cream sandwiches i've ever had - so good!

i watched a tiktok that said to learn german sentence structure you really just need to write out a bunch of sentences daily and speak as much as you can. so, i'm going to try that because i have stalled a bit with the grammar workbooks.

i have been listening to a lot of german music and writing/translating some of what they are saying. my favorite rn is shirin david - i listen to ich darf das all the time! to find music i just go to spotify and type in "top 50 germany" and it will show what's popular there at the moment.

to all my fellow language learners, it's tough but we can do this! let's keep on going ♡
