Depersonalization
Do you ever feel like you and the people around you aren’t real? Like, you exist, you are there, and so is everyone else, but it feels as if none of it is real? This experience is called depersonalization. It is a form of a panic attack, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just means you are spending a lot of time away from others. This leaves you to your own thoughts (which is supposedly dangerous for anyone, only because it can result in violent actions). Your brain is a weird and mysterious place. It has an imagination, meaning it can take you to places you have never seen, create events you have never experienced, and trick you into thinking you aren’t even real. The overuse of your mind can definitely take a toll on how you experience life. If you begin to experience depersonalization, you may also feel like nothing is very important anymore, and that everyone is here to work around you and react to things based on what you do. On the other hand, many people could be experiencing this for a different reason entirely. Humans are animals, no matter how hard we try to avoid the idea. We have a natural internal clock that has regulated our lives efficiently up until about 5 years ago. This is when technology and social trends started getting in the mix. With new trends and gadgets every day, our internal clock can’t tick fast enough to keep up. Everything just seems like it’s… advancing around us… We have no control over it. There are over 7 billion people in the world today. Each have their own ideas, emotions, and views of the world. With all the ideas, one new thing could come out every day for billions of years. That’s too fast. The average person can’t handle that. It’s like being stuck at a red light in between 2 busses that start moving forwards. Wait, are they moving forwards, or are we moving back? This effect makes us feel disconnected from the rest of the world, again leaving us to our thoughts. But there is a fix. Stopping this is just like stopping a panic attack. First of all, if you have experienced it once, you will experience it multiple more times. Here’s how you get rid of the effect: 1. You must become aware of the problem, but not react right away. Trying to snap out of it could make you truly panic. 2. Slowly and gradually refocus your brain on what is around you. Don’t make it immediate, just gradually, like a camera focusing on a close object. 3. Start interacting with the things or people around you. Boom, you have slipped right out of it. The most recent cause of this feeling has been while using VR headsets. This problem may become more prominent in the future, due to the rising popularity of the devices. That’s all for this one.
