Marketing in the Era of Big Data
The internet's second wave has brought about an abundance of data, too much and too complex to comprehend in the traditional sense of analysis. This phenomenon is dubbed Big Data, and a new industry and discipline of marketing are quickly building around it.
Big data refers to all of the information that is collected, captured, stored, searched, shared and transferred online. Within all of this data includes mass amounts of users' demographics, online and social media behavior, traffic and shopping habits -- all of which are of interest to marketers for obvious reasons. Digital marketing is shifting toward a reliance on Big Data in order to best identify opportunities that can increase conversions and market share.
McKinsey and Company's recent e-book Data, Analytics and the Future of Marketing and Sales reveals that companies using big data and analytics effectively show productivity rates and profitability 5 - 6% higher than those that do not. Further, a five-year study of over 250 engagements, showed that companies that use this data for marketing efforts improve ROI by 15 - 20%. Major e-tailers, such as Amazon.com, will be able to use their data to better serve consumers based on preference, their price comparisons, inventory, etc. Search engines and social platforms will use big data to micro-target audiences in order to attract advertisers. McKinsey asserts that companies need to use algorithms to process big data-- which includes tactics such as predictive statistics, machine learning and natural language mining. This programming can track consumer behavior and auto-update pricing across an entire product line.
Some are likening the big data phenomenon to the next industrial revolution. The World Economic Forum has identified data as a new class of assets, or "the new oil." Others are skeptical. James Glanz at the New York Times makes the argument that our economy became sluggish about the time that the big data industry emerged. He theorizes that increasing reliance on big data is only shifting marketing dollars from traditional media into consumer data and hyper-targeted digital marketing. The efficiencies that are achieved through analysis of big data should eventually expand the economy, but it's unlikely whether we will see a transformative innovation.
But big data isn't only for corporations and scientists. Analysis from sites like Google or Twitter will create the paradigm by which we measure marked cultural shifts. They serve as a mirror to the human experience.
