How many secrets are you keepin’, General Hux?
{Hux’s bookcase, study project}
This image is part of the second part of the Variations series called Intricacies III.
I started this as a visual exercise and fine tune my composition skills a little more. However, it turned into a series and I thought that a lot of others might enjoy it. For that reason, I’ve decided to turn it into a photography challenge.
It is called #variationschallenge and will start on 1st of February and I hope that a lot of you will like to join us. The outline of the challenge is as follow.
1 - One subject and as many composition that can be found with that subject. It does not have to be architecture, it can be landscape, architecture etc....
2 - It does not have to be black and white
3 - Tag your images with #variationschallenge and every week I will post your images.
It will be great if some of you here to also join the challenge
people who say math class is useless never had to use algebra to figure out what dimensions to make their canvas
Every Frame a Painting Youtube Channel Very interesting movie analysis, also on Tumblr
Today, is the first day of the craziest New Year’s Resolution I’ve made yet.
So, as a New Years Resolution, I will dedicate at least 2 hours everyday, to pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming the an authentic professional Composer. I’ve set the bar for myself to be considered the next Tchaikovsky and composing the next great modern ballet. This is an insane goal but I plan to pursue this dream ferociously. As a testament to my own efforts, I am blogging my progress, general statistics, where I stand in all of this, thoughts, and any future plans on this blog. This way, I can always look back to see how much or little I’ve accomplished.
Also, I have given myself a finite budget of $500 to invest in this lifelong dream for the year 2016. Nothing more can be spent until I earn money actually composing music in order to add back into my budget again.
Now, so far as I know, music is an art form, but it’s a little like being able to illustrate. If you’re good at it, and you’re self-taught, there is more respect for you when you begin your professional career without any formal education. But an education does help immensely, especially to build a solid foundation. I guess I need to do some more research on this in order to orient myself on what kind of education I’ll be need.
It seems for me, I’ve always listened to music, but I love the classics, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, etc. including film scores by Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, John Williams, John Powell and the likes. They all kind of solidified my love of how the classics can be modernized with infinite possibilities. Games like Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty also give me hope in a possibility of pursuing a career in composition, regardless of how hard it will be. Though I surmise getting into this industry is very difficult.
For me, it’s just, the difficulty in beginning my journey starts with the environment I am in, and the friends I’ve had throughout my years. They have, on occasion ridiculed and accosted me for listening to classical music, and for that matter laughed at my thoughts of pursuing the very idea that I can be somebody by creating those types of melodies and harmonies. Nobody else I know, has faith in me except for my girlfriend. She keeps hounding me to try, and keep working at it, even though I am constantly being dissuaded otherwise by my peers.
I really believe I need new friends, or at least some supportive ones.
My current friends, are the ones that like Rap, or Hip-Hop for one clique of mine, then there’s the Thrash Metal, Hard Rock, Punk, and Screamo for another. Oh, and then I have the guys I know who are into main stream music like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and the likes.
You know those people; they’re everywhere. And the people I want, are no where around where I am.
I mean I can listen to that kind of music just fine, but in small doses. I prefer something that’s not processed and comes naturally. Vocals are okay too, but I really don’t like the rhythmic lyrics and the way things sound either physically impractical, forced, or vindictively assaulting to my ears.
And I personally do not have a specific definition to music. But when I hear it, I know that that kind of music is what I want to create. It’s the music in my head, from the mundane things I see everyday, while going to work, or just living life. I just hear such wonderful music everywhere but no one else can feel its beauty and soul but me.
I just want this music to breathe life into this world from my imagination into some form of tangible source that people can view and appreciate.
I don’t know how long it will take or how much is needed of me to make my dream possible, but I am willing to try. Starting today.
And I just hope this is not a mistake.
Anyway, here I go.
8:00pm
Looked up ‘How to be a Composer’.
Ended up on www.artofcomposing.com.
The first page says: YOU WANT TO COMPOSE MUSIC, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE FORMAL TRAINING.You constantly have ideas, but don’t know how to develop them. You want a better grasp on the fundamental concepts of musical composition. It’s time to ditch the boring theory books, and get a breath of fresh air. CLICK HERE IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A COMPOSER
Wait, it can’t be that simple, can it?
Read a little further on this site. Talks about using their methods of composition and drilling in order to create music.
It doesn’t say anywhere where I can begin, or what I am really learning. I can’t even find a prospectus to see what courses are available. Are they even accredited?
This is really fishy. I can’t even find out how much to program costs. I may as well start somewhere else or of there is even a daytime contact number I can call to contact them. I think I’ll look somewhere else instead.
I’m starting to get other hits now on Google like Getting like: http://study.com/articles/Music_Composer_Career_Info_and_Requirements_for_Becoming_a_Professional_Composer.html A lot of these sites keep talking about requirements, academic degrees and qualifications. It seems I need to get a formal education after all in order to at least be qualified to say I know something about music.
9:00pm
The more I search, the more I come up with jobs and gigs that are offered for qualified professionals. There are words like Sound Engineer, Scorer, Composer, Mixer, Masterer, and the likes. I have no clue what any of these titles specifically mean or what qualifications I need to be them. God this is very confusing and tiresome.
So after much browsing, I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to look up an actual university that’s offering a real music degree in composition. The question is, would I be able to find a college? And also on their website, will I be able to get a list of their course requirements for the degree? Well, back on Google I go.
Nothing yet, either my Google-fu is bad or I just have no clue where I should start to look. Maybe if I just started jotting down phone numbers to music schools, they might be able to email me a copy of their course requirements.
Okay, so I looked up ‘Composition Degree’, and the fundamental information I need popped up. I stumbled onto the NYU Steinhardt site and found the undergraduate program curriculum requirements and their outline.
Still reading this page. http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/composition/curriculum/undergraduate
God, I’ve been looking all these things up. Things like Music Theory, Aural Comprehension and Music History. Wow.
10:00pm
There’s so much I need to know. There’s so much history behind music I didn’t even know existed. I thought Bach and Vivaldi was the closest to known music. I didn’t even think about Medieval or Renaissance music either. Wow.
Okay. I’ve been on YouTube, Wikipedia, and whatever else too long. This is getting too much. I need to focus and start at something I can actually do today. It seems one of the basic components of Music is knowing Music Theory. Apparently, from reading up on just the core courses, I have discovered that the fundamental foundations of music is Music Theory and Aural Comprehension. So, in my case, I think I’ll start with Music Theory. I don’t think I have that good of an ear, so Aural Comprehension may have to wait for now, I think. What I need to do is start learning how music is written and how it can be used. Music Theory is a good starting point. I should look up books on this.
So, on Amazon.com there is a Music Theory for Dummies book out there. And an Idiots Guide to Music Theory. But they do get somewhat costly. And I do want to start sometime today. I’ll check out torrents for this and possibly rapidshares of it too. My wallet wants to cry; its looks like its time to pirate!
11:00pm
Okay, I’ve found about three forum sites that have the book up for public sharing. Also, I found about 3 torrents on Music Theory on kickasstorrents and piratebay. Well, time to start downloading. I think in the long run, my torrents may be more beneficial than the public shares.
So I’ve downloaded the Music Theory for Dummies pdf and also started downloading a few torrents on Music Theory. They’re basically snailing at 50kb/s so I’ll just leave them on tonight.
I’ve transferred the pdf to my tablet and I guess I’m in for some heavy reading in bed. At least I’ve gotten somewhere, and this I think is beginning to look like a good start.
