The objective of the education system is misunderstood. The education system is designed to prepare students for the workforce, not to make them "smarter." The purpose of college or university is to teach students the knowledge and skills they need for their career. In the digital age, the information schools take from experts is accessible online and constantly being updated to be the most accurate. When done by studying expert-written material, there is no difference between self-education and institutional schooling, especially when you're being schooled in an outdated system.
I went to schools that couldn't afford to fire old teachers, so we were given a lot of outdated textbooks and told a lot of information that doesn't stand true today. I've remember times when my teachers taught me things that I later found out were wrong, like my biology teacher telling us people die from burns because the "skin shuts down", or my accounting teacher telling me you can use 30 seconds of copyrighted music legally.
School is effective for students that can retain information through text and verbal lecturing, which are two types of educating that don't work for everyone. The education system is a system, which means it's structured to work a certain way, and students that don't perform well in this model can be left feeling lost. The information is out there, and students that failed in the education system but have a hunger for knowledge will find it.
