Things I’ve learnt

This process has been quite eye opening mixing wise. There are a lot of things that I have learnt to consider, mostly to do with levels, and how to not let elements get in the way. 

This piece was a really minimal piece in terms of melody and harmony - and sometimes creating something minimal is difficult. E.g, I originally had the lush strings in the B section at a massive volume and it took away from the central melody - I wasn’t sure how to fix this. But once lowering the strings automation (which I stubbornly didn’t want to do at first), it makes such a difference and you realise you don’t need things to be as big as you thought they needed to be. Sensitivity is key, and that was my goal for this assignment amidst the Cataplexy Model. Working on speakers correlates with this, so I know for the next assignments to constantly listen through the speakers for what sounds good and what is missing or unwanted.

Another thing I’ve learnt - your opinion is what carries the mix. You need to be strong minded about how you think something should sound. If something sounds woofy, or too piercing, then you’ve gotta roll with that and keep mixing until you like what you hear. 

I’m a very write as you go kinda composer, that has always been my style. Never do I often sit and plan out what things are going to do. Personally, I think there is something natural about trying things as you go, not knowing what role an instrument is going to take until you hear something... Not knowing the strings are going to provide a harmonic movement until you write it... In saying that, I would like to take on board some more planning. This could perhaps provide my mind with a more clear artistic vision and a smoother work process. 

Note to self; you can’t push yourself to write something you don’t enjoy. As I said from the beginning, I did originally have a completely different idea and as much sketching out as I did, I just didn’t enjoy working on it. It is completely ok to have drafts, trial-error moments, and all the other bits and bobs that comes with composing/mixing.

Got out the old #sewing machine I received as a gift a couple Christmases ago. Finally going to use use it. Put some black thread on it and thread the bobbin(so hard 😭). Made a little pouch to see how it's working.
