Not pronouns but a Kazi related question, why do you think they are the only elf without face markings that we met? I considered it might be age, but Rayla's younger or maybe not being a warrior or royalty but Ethari is an example here so...

There are a few other Sunfire elves (specifically of the soldiers) who don’t have them - although I’d never noticed that Kazi doesn’t, somehow - like Sabah

So it seems like it could be a ranking or maybe even family thing? The Sunfire elves do seem to be more hierarchal than Moonshadow elves

So, this is kinda a continuation of a previous ficlet ask meme. (Interestingly, also number 18 in that meme)

As Encouragement

18. Sharing a soft smile across a crowded room.

Rayla sipped her wine, smiling stiffly at the small crowd of people around her. She was paying no attention to their conversation, her eyes firmly fixed on Callum.

He was engaged in conversation with an elderly couple on the far side of the room. They were both chatting animatedly to him and she was proud to see Callum seemed to be easily conversing back and forth with them.

She knew him well enough to pick up on how nervous he was though. How rapidly he nodded his head in agreement or how he kept tugging at his once immaculate tie.

That was fine though. Artists were expected to be a little eccentric.

She felt for him, knowing the dilemma he was struggling with. Delighted to be here but wishing the evening away so he could relax.

The couple said something to him that caused him to blush so red she could see it clearly, even given the distance. She smiled at him, heart beating rapidly at how utterly adorable he was. Nodding one last time, the couple took their leave and wandered off.

Callum sighed heavily, his shoulders slumping and posture slipping. He took a generous gulp of wine and Rayla couldn’t help but snort at him.

He scanned the crowd and she could tell his eyes were searching her out, moving from person to person until he finally found her, watching him from the far corner.

She smiled a little broader as he closed his eyes and shook his head in pantomime-like fashion.

Opening his eyes, he smiled at her and raised his glass in a silent toast.

Rayla mirror his actions, winking at him subtlety and in what she hoped was an encouraging manner as she saw a very professional-looking man deliberately approach him.

Callum winked back at her, then turned to greet the man with a renewed confidence.

Kiss ask meme 45. …out of anger. I feel like this will be angsty (Before writing) Update: It’s angsty.

“Why did you take that hit for me?!” Rayla screams at him as he lays on the bed with a arrow notched into his collar bone. Her nostrils flaring as the temperature of the room seems to increase.

“You think I wanted to see you get hurt again?” Callum starts weakly, looking at her with red cheeks. His hands motions to the arrow still impaling his body. “This is the price that I paid willingly for you, Ray!” He yells but then regrets it as he starts coughing.

Rayla adjusts the wet cloth on his head and fixes the pillows so that he’s be more comfortable. All without looking at his face. She could yell at him more for his stupidity later, but for now she’ll just have to do with silence.

Where’s that flipping healer?! Rayla curses as she narrows her eyes on the door. Didn’t the guards say that the healer was coming soon? Why were they taking so damn long?

She huffs to herself, knowing the answer. She’s an elf. Of course no one would come to aid an elf’s guest. Let alone a prince of a human kingdom that proclaimed peace with Xadia. She paces the room while looking anywhere other than Callum. Which proven to be rather difficult.

“Rayla, I’m sorry.” He says, shifting his head to look at her and gave her a small smile. “I know you’re strong and capable of defending yourself but-“

“You’re not getting it, Callum! You never do!” Rayla turns to him and raises her hands in the air. “You got hit by a bounty hunter! I heard them coming and you still pushed me out of the way.” She storms towards his bed points accusingly at him. “You could’ve stopped them from your Aspiro, but nooooo. You had to-“

He glares at her, takes her wrist, and pulls her to his lips. It was messy, but it got her to stop talking. The anger was still present. The heavy tension between wasn’t leaving, but it wasn’t as stiff anymore.

She pulls away and glares at him for equal measure. “You’re lucky you’re the fucking prince of Katolis or I would’ve murdered you for doing that.” Her threat wasn’t serious. Her cheeks were tinted pink and her eyes were unfocused. “Never, take the blow for me again. Ever. You hear me, your highness?”

Callum gives her a weak smile. So much for that strategy. His face was burning and he could feel Rayla replace the wet cloth with another one to cool him down. Her hands felt nice in his hair. Maybe she could…

The door swings open and a toothy looking sunfire elf enters into the room with a bag full of medical supplies and herbs. Rayla turns with her blades out and Callum groans when she accidentally hits the arrow.

“So, I heard you needed a healer?” The sunfire asks with a raised eyebrow at the two of them.

Oooh, so strangely it was actually pretty much the opening scene for that fic!

I have always wondered what would have happened if Ez hadn't interrupted Callum and Rayla when she was threatening him during their first meeting. She couldn't bring herself to kill Marcos and they had much less interaction, so there's no way she could have brought herself to kill Callum...

The idea had me intrigued since I first watched the show and I couldn't believe I hadn't come across a fic exploring it. (If anyone has found one please share! I would read anything that explores that idea!)

It stuck with me when I finally took the plunge to write fic post season three and I played around with the idea while writing my earlier fics. The whole thing has been through three major re-writes (as in 50k in I decided to change something minor but important) and it keeps growing as I puzzle out the implications of everything.

But yeah, this one actually started at the beginning!
