Since childhood I have intrinsically understood the capability of dress to uplift, empower, and transform. As I grew older, I found this concept present in glamour magic and witchcraft which propelled my fascination forward. I created a leather top for myself years ago that embodied this magical idea and lately, have wanted to create another one. I recently partook in @persephonespath’s Poisonous Plant Medicine Level 2 class where Kathryn assigned an open-ended final project meant to honor our work. Immediately my desire to create this bustier came to mind but I wasn’t entirely sure why. As I worked on this piece, it dawned on me that most of my poisonous plant allies had given me a garment of protection during my shamanic journeys and it was time for me to turn that spiritual experience into a physical one. My journey on the Poison Path has led me thru intense shadow work and helped me fortify my boundaries, bringing awareness and empowerment. This bustier is my expressive way of honoring that work, creating a physical representation of the psychic armor that these plants have helped me build. As the first piece in a personal collection of sacred garments meant to be worn during ritual, it is a tool to raise my energy and enrich my magical practices. Every stitch and brush stroke pays homage to my plant allies of Henbane, Belladonna, Monkshood, and Datura, as well as my connections with Venus and Saturn. It has been incredibly fulfilling taking a break from the printshop and stretching my artistic legs to work on something special that holds immense personal meaning. I realized that I rarely showcase my artistic skillsets beyond drawing and printmaking, so I’m excited to show you this glimpse into my sewing and painting skills! Although I’ve always dabbled in making clothing for myself, this is the first pattern I made from scratch.
