We explored Walthamstow Wetlands (@walthamstowwetlands) last weekend, as we wanted to check out what bird life we might find in the colder months. It was pretty damn chilly so we were surprised to find (rather psychotic-looking) Egyptian Geese - who normally hang out on the significantly warmer River Nile! The wetlands is made up of numerous man-made reservoirs, many of which have islands, perfect for birds seeking a bit of peace and quiet. It’s known for its many herons (we saw huge nests!). ⠀ ⠀ As well as the birdlife the reservoirs have some great views as they’re on reasonably high ground, allowing you to look across to Canary Wharf and beyond, as you'd expect as its also a fully operational 211 hectare Thames Water reservoir site which is the main source of water supply for a rather substantial 3.5 million people. There are walking tracks or cycling routes, and also a cafe in the rather interesting Engine Room building.⠀ ⠀ How to get there: Regular bus services 123 and 230 stop outside Walthamstow Wetlands, at the Ferry Boat Inn bus stop. Alternatively, the main entrance is a seven-minute walk from Tottenham Hale station (Victoria line tube, Greater Anglia, Stansted Express) and a ten-minute walk from Blackhorse Road station (Victoria line tube and Overground line).
