LeBron James assist short of triple-double in Cavs' win
ORLANDO, Fla./January 6, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — LeBron James had 33 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to just miss a triple-double in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 131-127 victory over the Orlando Magic on Saturday night.

Down 107-87 to start the fourth quarter, the Magic cut the deficit to five on Hezonja’s 3-pointer with 2:39 left. Payton’s layup in traffic made it 128-125 with 40 seconds to play.
On Cleveland’s next possession, Thomas shot an air-ball from the free-throw line, but Wade grabbed the ball it in stride and made the layup to give the Cavs a 130-125 lead with 17.8 seconds left.

The Sixth Man Says - 5 Discussion points after the NBA Finals
Who really deserved to win the Finals MVP?
It was a two horse race for the majority of the finals with Curry only really throwing his name in the hat late in the series. Let’s look at their two averages for the series:
Lebron – 35.8 points, 8.8 assists and 13.3 rebounds over 6 games at an average of 45.5 mins
Iguodala- 16.3 points, 4 assists and 5.8 rebounds over 6 games at an average of 36.9 mins
Lebron was a monster in the finals. He did everything he could to get his team over the line and he still fell short. Averaging a near triple double alone is ridiculous enough. The Warriors were able to wear him down over the course of 6 games but Lebron never showed that it was affecting him. His shot attempts rose through the roof only because they had to. He wasn’t getting the help he needed for them to win the series. It’s a shame that such a dominating performance won’t be remembered with a title because it was some of the best basketball Lebron has played over his career.
Iguodala being inserted into the starting line-up in Game 4 was the game changer for the Warriors. The Cavs had gotten off to hot starts in the first 3 games and despites everyone’s thoughts that Draymond Green could guard Lebron, he simply couldn’t. Iguodalas shooting was the worry because by going completely small ball with no Bogut, there’s no one to get the rebounds if you miss.
It really is a make or miss league and Iguodala especially made them when it counted. His defensive efforts on Lebron were outstanding. The shots he made were the shots the Warriors wanted him to take and you can’t do anything more. Wearing down Lebron was the key to the last 3 games because when the Warriors made their runs in the last quarter, Lebron was heavily fatigued by then and wasn’t able to keep up.
The MVP isn’t decided by umpires so get that out of your head. The NBA chose 11 of the best and most prominent figures in NBA journalism to cast their vote on who they thought deserved the trophy. Each journalist only gets one vote. 7 voted for Iguodola and 4 for Lebron so no one else got votes. Since the award was introduced in 1969, only one player has won the award on a losing team and that was its very first year. 45 times in a row now the winning team has had the Finals MVP so Lebron’s case was already slim from that point of view.
MVP stands for most valuable player yet it’s rarely given with that in mind. Take each player off their teams. Do the Warriors win the Finals if Iguodalas numbers aren’t counted at all? Whatever your answer is, The Cavs probably don’t win any games at all without the numbers Lebron put up during these finals. That makes him the more valuable player. Forget the fact that they lost the finals in 6 games. They lose in 4 by an average of 20 if he doesn’t play at all, let alone the way he did.
Obviously if you do that to a lot of the team’s best players in the league you are going to get the same result. Teams will be bad without their best player but it’s only relevant to this situation.
It’s a mindset that I think has tarnished the award a little over the years and the league should reconsider how they give the award in the future. Some years its obviously going to be a clear choice like Kawhi Leonard was last year but the NBA is a pretty even competition these days. Seeing something like this happen again is likely.
Kerr made the right moves at the right moments
Changing a starting line-up that’s worked for you all season long is right up there with some of the more risky things you can do in the NBA Finals. Steve Kerr made the call to put Andre Iguodala in the starting line-up for Game 4 and it was a genius move. It was a move that helped Andre win the Finals MVP, them winning the championship and most importantly, figure out the Lebron James problem.
The Cavs couldn’t change their starting lineup to adjust for a few reasons. One was if you take out Mozgov, all rim protection is gone. They weren’t good enough perimeter defenders to do that either so it was essentially plugging one hole to unplug another. Secondly, the move on paper was meant to work in the Cavs favour. The Warriors weren’t hitting their shots early so adding another shooter while taking out a rebounder should’ve harmed them more then helped, right?
Wrong. It increased the tempo to another level and forced the Cavs to run with them. They won’t blame fatigue but the Cavs had nothing left to give by the time Game 6 rolled around. Too many weapons was always the strength the Warriors were banking on them to win but Kerr had to figure out how to use them in the right way. When you only lose 20 odd games all year it’s a lot harder to fix a problem than usual but he did it. How many first year coaches would’ve done what he did?
The way to win in the NBA has officially changed for good
Traditionalists of the game were convinced The Warriors couldn’t win the NBA Finals because they didn’t have a traditional low post threat. The Steve Kerr coaching era transformed Bogut and Lee into playmakers instead of back to the basket scorers that they have made their careers off. The Hawks were badly exposed by the Cavs when they couldn’t knock down their shots and many thought the Cavs could do the same in the finals. The Warriors winning the way they did is proof that a low post threat is no longer needed to win a title.
Golden State aren’t just purely a jump shooting team. They get out and run and have plenty of players that can beat their man off the dribble as well. Their game plan of spreading the floor is a lot more evolved then just having a centre with 4 shooters around him. They create so much room for each other that it doesn’t matter who shoots the ball, just as long as it’s a good shot. It’s Spurs like but it’s jacked up a few notches.
Having Curry and his ability to light up at any moment is helpful to that but they have 8 guys that can all score 20 points without the flow of the offense. The Hawks didn’t which is why they got swept. The Cavs didn’t do a bad job defensively for the series. They just couldn’t keep up offensively.
What’s next for the Cavs?
The temptation to make rational moves must be very large right now for the Cavs. Lebron has shown multiple times already how little patience and tolerance he has for losing which may put Blatt under a little pressure. They’ll be open to all discussions on the trade table with the need for one more playmaker in their minds. Varejao returning from injury next season will help them even more with a solid 3 man front court rotation. Haywood will likely be traded off for whatever they can get with the amount of success they’re getting out of Mozgov.
The reality is they were up 2-1 with game 4 in Cleveland without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. Trading for Mozgov saved their season and nearly won them the title. Blatt will learn from his first season in the NBA but even though he didn’t win it all, he beat 3 very good coaches to get to the finals. Brad Stevens is widely renowned as the greatest play calling coach in the league right now, everyone knows about Tom Thibodeau and his defensive schemes and Mike Budenholzer won coach of the year.
If Kevin Love decides to leave after one season then maybe alarm bells can start ringing but until then, only patience is needed. The East isn’t going to get to a level where the Cavs won’t be favourites for the finals again and they’ll be much more careful when it comes to the injuries of their players. Their offseason will be a big motivational tool to get back to where they need to be and no one is going to stop a motivated Lebron James.
Can the Warriors improve on this season?
Yes and No. Absolutely everything went right for the Warriors this year. Injuries to Michael Conley, Dwight Howard, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love all were big factors in them winning the championship. All of those players were injured while they had a fully healthy roster. They timed their run to absolute perfection. They avoided the Clippers and the Spurs in the finals bracket. They had a game plan that took teams too long to adjust to. You need luck to win the NBA Finals and the Warriors had plenty of it. They’ve lost their offensive coach Alvin Gentry to the Pelicans and they might lose David Lee as well.
The West isn’t getting weaker as well. You can bet your life Kevin Durant is going to play next season with a big point to prove. The Rockets, Spurs, Clippers, Grizzlies and Blazers aren’t losing anyone in free agency and even if they beat all of them again, The Cavs will more than likely have a healthy Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving for the second time around. The NBA is too tough in its current state to have dynasty’s that win multiple championships in a row and the Warriors might find that out the hard way.
In saying all that, they can improve by a lot. Curry, Thompson, Barnes and Ezeli are all going to get better. Steve Kerr made plenty of mistakes on his way to the finals that he will learn from. Things like stopping momentum through timeouts and play calling down the stretch takes a while to become good at so he will only get better the longer he coaches. All of the players know what it takes to win now and they know the work they have to put in to get there. Experience in success is the catalyst that leads to more success and there’s no chance they will experience any ‘deer in the headlights’ moments from here on.

Miami Heat: LeBron plays the competition
Miami Heat: LeBron James, who announced Monday that it was ending its contract with Miami to become a “free agent” is preparing to test the market to see which team is ready to make him the best offer.
LeBron James has decided to play the competition. The iconic player Heat, still under contract two seasons with the franchise in Florida, chose to make his release clause to see if the check is playing better stocked elsewhere.
Ten times All-Star, arrived in Miami from Cleveland during the 2010-2011 season, is an essential and indispensable element of the Pat Riley and has 4 past in sunny Florida seasons, played in four finals and won two rings NBA. What make estimated income more than comfortable – regarding his only remuneration – to $ 20 million per year.
Enlist the services of “King James” therefore has a cost. A big hit as few franchises can afford. And if the double Olympic champion likes to quote Cleveland, Atlanta or Los Angeles Lakers as potential destinations, Miami knows that there is something big to play.
“We expected this decision completely, it is not a surprise recognizes Pat Riley, the Heat president. We can not wait to sit at the negotiating table with LeBron and his representatives to talk about our future together. “A future that could be summarized in two figures: 5 years contract and a nice check for $ 127 million when other teams can not offer him a signature for 4 seasons and a contract worth 95 million dollars.
