Colonies’ Contributions
All of the twelve colonies founded in the seventeenth century made an impact on America and the continuing legacy of the country. However, the Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, and Virginia colonies were the top three when it came to continuing American values of social plurality, religious toleration, and economic materialism respectively.
The Massachusetts Bay Colony was set in modern-day Massachusetts and Maine. It was settled in 1628. The colony itself was settled directly on Native American’s land, which posed a problem for the incoming settlers. The Native Americans that lived there, which were mainly braches of the Iroquois nation, ignored the settlers for the majority of the first year they were there. Since over half the population of incoming English died in during the first winter, they sought help from the Native Americans. For a few years, this friendship lasted and while it was there, it was real. Later, the Native American tribes realized that the settlers were there for profit, and they were angered enough to go into a state of war. Originally, the Puritans, or a sect of the Calvinists from the Lutheran religion, were the ones to settle the land in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were moving from other areas to avoid religious persecution, so they settled a new area for themselves.
The Pilgrims, who were a separate religion from the Puritans although their beliefs were similar, settled a colony named Plymouth just south of Massachusetts Bay. This colony was disbanded within a few years, with most of the colonists settling closer the Bay colony. This led to the integration of more peoples together in the one colony. This was also a step towards religious tolerance, although it was mainly an example of the changing demographics of the new settlements in America.
Lord Baltimore led several groups of people to a new colony in the new land—Maryland Colony. It was settled as a colony in 1632, and it was known for its tolerance of many religions. This was a major turning point for the new colonies, since the majority of them were the result of a single religion or race attempting to make a better life for themselves and wanting freedom to practice their own customs, by themselves. In the first decades of the colony’s existence, the different religions that existed in the area, including Catholicism, Anglicanism, and Puritanism, it wasn’t uncommon for their to be religious arguments or harbored dislikes against people that held different beliefs. It was only until later that the colony truly showed its potential for changing the way colonies viewed themselves. The colony was among the first that embraced Catholics into their society, since the rest of the colonies that were established had been done so that the people could live in peace away from the Catholics who were known for their persecution. This colony was a prime example of one that was religious tolerant.
Economic materialism was not a large part of the American colonies until a few decades after its settlement. After the initial problems faded away, such as finding a stable food source and surviving the epidemics of the harsh winters, the people needed to find ways to make money, and they wanted to make profit. They started with trading with the Native Americans. At first they traded what they came with, and received the necessities in return. Later, they began to trade and import from England, and used those goods to trade with the Native Americans. Virginia was part of the London Company, which used its new land in America for profit. They traded, farmed, and did everything they could to rake money out of the new area. The people in the colonies had to work for themselves, and also were employed for the company. When the immigrants in America began to make money from their work, they began to buy things with their money. This led to the thirst for wealth and power and material items. The yearn for material items also contributed to the problems with Native Americans, who were happy with their simple lives and resented the greed that the newcomers were developing.
The colonies of Massachusetts Bay, Maryland and Virginia were three of the most influential of the American values in the seventeenth century and onward. They helped bring about cultural unity in social plurality and religious tolerance, as well as showed their true selves in the economic materialism. This was part of the new world in America, and integrated into the things to come.
